Goa Unveils New Port Terminal as Centre Fast-Tracks Water Metro Project to Boost Maritime Infrastructure


Panaji, Goa |The Government of India has taken another major step toward strengthening the country’s maritime infrastructure with the inauguration of a new Captain of Ports Terminal Building in Panaji, Goa. During the ceremony, Union Minister for Ports, Shipping and Waterways Sarbananda Sonowal announced that the Goa Water Metro Project has been placed on the Phase-I priority implementation list, underscoring the Centre’s commitment to modern, sustainable water transportation.

The newly inaugurated waterfront facility, built at a cost of ₹48.87 crore, is expected to enhance river navigation, port administration, and passenger services, while supporting Goa’s vision of becoming a leading maritime and tourism hub.

Modern Waterfront Infrastructure

Located along the scenic Mandovi River, the four-story Captain of Ports Building spans more than 4,400 square meters and will serve as the new headquarters of Goa’s Captain of Ports Department.

The state-of-the-art facility has been designed to improve the management of inland waterways and maritime operations. It includes:

  • Modern Passenger Facilities
  • Conference and Meeting Halls
  • Advanced Navigation Control Systems
  • Radio Communication Centre
  • Administrative Offices

The building is expected to significantly improve vessel monitoring, operational efficiency, and public service delivery across Goa’s waterways.

Public Amenities and Community Spaces

Beyond its administrative functions, the new terminal has also been developed as a community-friendly waterfront destination.

Among its notable features are:

  • A Public Restaurant
  • A Rooftop Amphitheater with Seating for Approximately 450 People
  • Open Spaces for Maritime Events, Cultural Programs, and Community Gatherings

These facilities are expected to promote tourism while creating an attractive public space for residents and visitors alike.

Goa Water Metro Receives Major Boost

A key announcement during the inauguration was the government’s decision to prioritize the Goa Water Metro Project under the first phase of implementation.

According to Union Minister Sarbananda Sonowal, the upcoming Water Metro system will provide an environmentally friendly, efficient, and modern public transport network that connects key locations through Goa’s rivers and waterways.

The project is expected to:

Major Investments at Mormugao Port

The Union Minister also reviewed the ongoing development of Mormugao Port, one of India’s key commercial ports.

According to the government:

  • More than ₹1,300 crore has already been invested in completed infrastructure projects.
  • An additional ₹2,000 crore worth of expansion and modernization projects are currently under implementation.

The investments are focused on improving cargo handling capacity, operational efficiency, and long-term port competitiveness.

Mormugao Achieves Green Port Status

In another significant milestone, Mormugao Port has officially been recognized as a “Green Port” for adopting environmentally responsible operational practices.

The recognition reflects the government’s broader commitment to:
