Hyderabad, India: Actor Ajay Devgn’s upcoming action-drama film “Chauhan” has found itself at the center of a growing controversy after the release of its official teaser. While the teaser has attracted significant attention online, it has also sparked criticism from social organizations and public figures over its dialogue and portrayal of historical identity.
According to reports, the teaser has crossed 5 million views on YouTube within just four days of its release. However, one particular dialogue—“Tell the Pathans that Chauhan is coming”—has triggered widespread debate, especially in Kashmir.
Kshatriya Parishad Issues Strong Statement
The Kshatriya Parishad released an official statement on its X (formerly Twitter) account, condemning what it described as the use of the “Chauhan” name for contemporary communal politics.
In its statement, the organization said:
“We strongly condemn any attempt to use the name of the Chauhan clan for present-day communal political narratives. Rajput history is not a political weapon.”
The organization emphasized that the legacy of the Chauhan dynasty is an important part of Rajput history and should not be used to promote divisive political narratives or artificially created controversies.
The Parishad further urged political leaders, filmmakers, and media organizations to treat India’s historical legacy with responsibility and respect, rather than using historical figures to fuel social or political divisions.
Why Has the Teaser Sparked Controversy?
The controversy primarily revolves around the teaser’s dialogue:
“Tell the Pathans that Chauhan is coming.”
Critics argue that the line appears to associate Kashmiris with Pathans, which many believe is historically and socially inaccurate. The dialogue has been interpreted by some as offensive and politically sensitive, leading to protests and criticism in Kashmir.
The film is reportedly set against the backdrop of Kashmir, where issues related to security operations, stone-pelting incidents, and the region’s complex political history remain highly sensitive.
Swara Bhasker Also Raises Objections
Actor Swara Bhasker has also publicly expressed concerns about the teaser, joining others who have criticized the dialogue for its potential impact on communal harmony and public sentiment.
Background on Pellet Gun Debate
The controversy has also revived discussions about the use of pellet shotguns by Indian security forces during periods of unrest in Kashmir, particularly during the 2016 protests.
A 2022 study published in the Indian Journal of Ophthalmology examined 777 patients who suffered eye injuries caused by pellet guns. The study concluded that although pellet guns may be considered less lethal than conventional firearms, they can still cause severe and permanent eye damage, highlighting the humanitarian concerns surrounding their use.
No Official Response Yet
As of now, Ajay Devgn, director Neeraj Yadav, and the film’s producers have not issued an official response to the criticism from the Kshatriya Parishad or other groups.
With the film already attracting widespread attention, it remains to be seen whether the filmmakers will address the concerns or make changes before the movie’s release.
The controversy underscores the continuing debate over how India’s historical figures and identities should be represented in popular cinema, particularly when such portrayals intersect with contemporary political and social sensitivities.
