Washington, D.C. — Republican Congresswoman Anna Paulina Luna has come under public scrutiny after an amendment to her national security legislation appeared to reveal that artificial intelligence (AI) was used during the drafting process.
The controversy began when a version of the amendment posted on the House Rules Committee website accidentally included the line, “11:25 AM????Claude responded,” suggesting that Claude, an AI chatbot developed by Anthropic, had been involved in editing or generating the document.
The unexpected text quickly spread across social media, sparking debate over the growing role of AI tools in government and legislative work. Critics questioned whether lawmakers should rely on AI when preparing legislation, particularly on sensitive issues involving national security.
Responding to the criticism, Rep. Anna Paulina Luna clarified that the AI tool was not used to write the bill’s policy or legal content. Instead, she explained that one of her staff members had only used Claude to check spelling, grammar, and formatting before the document was submitted.
“Not a shocker. Most staff use it,” Luna said, defending the routine use of AI for basic editing tasks.
The incident has reignited discussions about the increasing use of generative AI in government offices. While many congressional staff members and professionals use AI-powered tools to improve writing efficiency, experts stress that human oversight remains essential, especially when drafting legislation that could impact national security, public policy, and federal law.
The accidental inclusion of the AI-generated note highlights the importance of carefully reviewing official documents before publication. Although the mistake did not alter the substance of the amendment, it has raised broader questions about transparency, accountability, and the appropriate use of AI technology in the legislative process.
As AI adoption continues to expand across both the public and private sectors, the incident serves as a reminder that while AI can improve productivity, government officials remain responsible for ensuring the accuracy, integrity, and security of official documents.
