Subbaiah suggests a law requiring citizens to donate 1% of their lifetime savings to the armed forces at the end of their lives
Madurai: In a remarkable gesture of gratitude towards India’s armed forces, an 80-year-old retired employee from Madurai, Tamil Nadu, has donated his entire life savings of ₹60 lakh to the Armed Forces Flag Day Fund (AFFDF).
Subbaiah, a resident of the Harveypatti area of Madurai, is a retired employee of Mathura Coats Company. His wife passed away several years ago, and the couple had no children.
During a grievance redressal camp, Subbaiah handed over documents related to ₹30 lakh in savings held in his bank account, along with gold jewellery worth ₹30 lakh kept in his locker and a ₹10,000 cheque to Madurai Collector Nishanth Krishna.
The gesture left officials at the camp deeply appreciative of his contribution and commitment to the armed forces.
‘The Army Protects Our Country’
Explaining his decision, Subbaiah said he had no immediate family to whom he needed to leave his savings and wanted his money to support the soldiers who protect the country.
“I have neither a wife nor children. The armed forces protect our country, and I feel happy contributing money to our soldiers,” he said.
Subbaiah said he initially wanted to donate the entire amount in cash, but banking regulations did not allow him to do so. He therefore chose to make arrangements through a will to ensure that his savings reach the armed forces.
Wants Interest From Savings to Go to Soldiers
Subbaiah also expressed his desire to donate the monthly interest earned from his savings to the armed forces.
He suggested that the government consider introducing a law under which citizens could contribute 1% of their total lifetime savings to the armed forces at the end of their lives.
“I want the interest earned from my savings every month to go to the armed forces. There should be a law that all citizens contribute 1% of their total savings to the armed forces at the end of their lives. Soldiers work extremely hard to protect us,” he said.
He added that citizens should remain grateful to members of the armed forces for their service and sacrifice.
Body Donated to Medical College in 2013
Subbaiah’s contribution to society extends beyond his financial donation.
In 2013, he had pledged to donate his body to Rajaji Government Medical College in Madurai for medical education and research.
His decision to donate his life savings to the armed forces and his earlier pledge of body donation reflect his long-standing commitment to public service and the welfare of society.

Government officials present at the grievance redressal camp expressed their appreciation for Subbaiah’s extraordinary gesture.
His decision to contribute ₹60 lakh, accumulated through decades of savings, to the Armed Forces Flag Day Fund has drawn attention as an example of personal sacrifice, patriotism and gratitude towards India’s soldiers.
The donation is particularly notable because Subbaiah chose to dedicate his lifetime savings to the armed forces despite having no children or immediate family members to inherit them.
His message was simple: the nation’s soldiers protect its citizens, and citizens should do their part to support them.
