NMDC Holds Talks with SADC Delegation on Mining and Critical Minerals

NMDC engages with a 10-country SADC delegation to explore strategic partnerships in mining, critical minerals and overseas mineral assets across Southern Africa

New Delhi : NMDC Limited, India’s leading mining and mineral exploration company, held discussions with a high-level delegation from the Southern African Development Community (SADC) to explore opportunities for strategic cooperation in mining and critical minerals across Southern Africa.

The delegation, representing 10 of the 16 SADC member countries, visited NMDC as part of efforts to deepen cooperation between India and the Southern African region in the mining and mineral resources sector.

Delegation from 10 SADC countries

Representatives from the following countries participated in the discussions:

  • Botswana
  • Eswatini
  • Lesotho
  • Madagascar
  • Malawi
  • Mauritius
  • Namibia
  • Seychelles
  • South Africa
  • Zimbabwe

The engagement provided an opportunity for NMDC and representatives of mineral-rich African nations to discuss potential areas of collaboration and investment.

Focus on critical minerals

A key focus of the discussions was the growing importance of critical minerals for industrial development, advanced manufacturing, clean-energy technologies and global supply-chain security.

As countries around the world seek to diversify their sources of strategically important minerals, Africa has emerged as an important region because of its substantial mineral resources.

For India, deeper engagement with mineral-rich countries in Africa could help strengthen access to strategically important resources and support the country’s long-term mineral security.

Opportunities for overseas mining

The discussions also explored the potential for cooperation in overseas mining assets and mineral-resource development.

For NMDC, expanding engagement with African countries could create opportunities to participate in mineral exploration, mining projects and resource-development initiatives outside India.

Such partnerships could also contribute to strengthening India’s supply chains for minerals that are increasingly important for emerging technologies and the energy transition.

Strengthening India-Africa mineral partnerships

The meeting reflects the broader efforts to strengthen India-Africa cooperation in the mining and natural resources sector.

The SADC region, comprising 16 member states, is rich in a variety of mineral resources. Greater cooperation with the region could potentially create mutually beneficial opportunities for both India and African countries through investment, technical expertise, mineral exploration and development of mining assets.

For SADC member countries, partnerships with experienced Indian public-sector mining enterprises such as NMDC could provide access to technical capabilities and expertise in mineral exploration and mining.

Strategic importance for NMDC

The engagement comes at a time when securing reliable supplies of critical minerals has become an important priority for major economies.

NMDC’s discussions with the SADC delegation could therefore support the company’s broader efforts to explore international mining opportunities and strategically important mineral resources.

The meeting also highlights the potential for greater cooperation between Indian public-sector enterprises and African countries in developing mineral resources while creating long-term economic opportunities.
