Hindustan Zinc Raises Renewable Power Share to 22%, Targets 70% by FY28

Company expands round-the-clock renewable power agreement to 530 MW as part of its clean energy and decarbonisation strategy

Udaipur : Hindustan Zinc Limited, the world’s largest integrated zinc producer, has increased the share of renewable energy in its overall electricity consumption to 22%, up from around 18% in FY26.

The company has set an ambitious target of meeting around 70% of its total power requirements from renewable sources by FY28, strengthening its focus on clean energy and reducing its environmental footprint.

Renewable Power Generation Sees Strong Growth

Hindustan Zinc’s green power generation increased to 892 million units (MU) in FY26, compared with 632 MU in FY25.

As part of its renewable energy expansion, the company has also increased its round-the-clock (RTC) renewable power delivery agreement with Serentica Renewables from 450 MW to 530 MW.

The expanded renewable energy portfolio combines solar, wind and energy storage solutions, enabling the company to access reliable clean power around the clock.

Focus on Energy Efficiency and Green Infrastructure

Alongside renewable energy procurement, Hindustan Zinc is undertaking several initiatives to improve its overall energy efficiency.

The company is upgrading its power connectivity from the state transmission network to the Central Transmission Utility (CTU). It is also implementing in-house projects such as enhanced waste-heat recovery systems and floating solar installations on water ponds.

These measures are aimed at reducing dependence on conventional power sources while improving operational efficiency.

CEO Highlights Role of Clean Energy

Amarendu Prakash, CEO, Hindustan Zinc, said the future growth of the metals and mining industry would increasingly depend on producing more while reducing environmental impact.

He said renewable power now accounts for 22% of the company’s electricity consumption, with the ambition of taking the share to 70% by FY28. According to him, clean energy is not only a decarbonisation tool but also an important component of building a more resilient, competitive and responsible business.

Part of Net Zero Roadmap

Hindustan Zinc said the renewable energy initiatives are part of its broader sustainability strategy and support its Science Based Targets initiative (SBTi)-validated pathway towards Net Zero emissions by 2050 or sooner.

The company has also highlighted several ESG achievements, including:

  • Recognition as the world’s most sustainable metals and mining company by the S&P Global Corporate Sustainability Assessment for the third consecutive year.
  • Becoming the first Indian company to join the International Council on Mining and Metals (ICMM) in 2025.
  • Developing EcoZen, described by the company as Asia’s first low-carbon ‘green’ zinc brand.

Hindustan Zinc, a Vedanta Group company, supplies zinc and silver to more than 40 countries and has around 74% of India’s primary zinc market.
