Chennai, India – : In a major step toward strengthening women’s safety and security, Tamil Nadu Chief Minister Vijay officially launched the Singappen Special Task Force, a dedicated all-women police unit designed to enhance protection for women across the state.
During the launch ceremony in Chennai, the Chief Minister announced an investment of ₹354 crore (approximately $41 million) to support the initiative, covering infrastructure, technology, training, vehicles, and operational requirements. He also flagged off a fleet of special patrol vehicles that will be deployed by the newly formed force.
A key highlight of the initiative is the introduction of drone-assisted policing, making the Singappen unit the first women’s safety force in India to conduct drone-based surveillance and patrol operations. The drones will be used to monitor public spaces, crowded areas, educational institutions, transportation hubs, and locations identified as vulnerable to crimes against women.
According to state officials, the Singappen Special Task Force has been established to provide a rapid and specialized response to incidents involving harassment, stalking, assault, and other crimes targeting women. The force will work closely with local police departments and emergency response systems to ensure faster intervention and improved public safety.
Chief Minister Vijay said the initiative reflects the government’s commitment to creating a safer environment for women and girls while leveraging modern technology to improve law enforcement capabilities. He emphasized that the combination of women-led policing, advanced surveillance tools, and community engagement would help build greater confidence among citizens.
