Life Insurance Corporation of India acquires 19.09 lakh shares of Power Grid, taking its holding above the 5% disclosure threshold
Mumbai : Life Insurance Corporation of India (LIC) has increased its shareholding in Power Grid Corporation of India Ltd. to 5.01% after purchasing 19.09 lakh equity shares through an open-market transaction.
LIC disclosed the acquisition on August 18, 2026, under Regulation 29(1) of the SEBI (Substantial Acquisition of Shares and Takeovers) Regulations, 2011.

According to the regulatory filing, LIC acquired 19,09,000 equity shares of Power Grid on August 17, 2026 through the open market.
The transaction increased LIC’s holding from 4.989% to 5.010%.

Power Grid’s total equity share capital remained unchanged at 93,00,60,38,190 shares before and after the transaction.
Why the 5% Level Matters
LIC’s holding has now crossed the 5% threshold, triggering the relevant disclosure requirements under SEBI’s takeover regulations.
LIC has clarified that it is not part of the promoter or promoter group of Power Grid Corporation.
The disclosure was submitted to Power Grid’s Company Secretary and the stock exchanges, BSE and NSE, along with the required regulatory details.
LIC Continues to Hold a Significant Position
Following the latest purchase, LIC now holds more than 46.59 crore shares of Power Grid.
The acquisition represents a relatively small increase in percentage terms but is significant from a regulatory perspective because LIC’s holding has moved above the 5% threshold.
