New Delhi, India |In a major political development, India’s Union Education Minister, Dharmendra Pradhan, resigned from his position on Saturday following days of nationwide student protests over alleged irregularities in the NEET-UG 2026 examination. The resignation comes after mounting pressure from students and opposition groups demanding accountability for the controversy surrounding one of India’s most important medical entrance exams.
In his resignation letter addressed to Prime Minister Narendra Modi, Pradhan said his decision was taken in the interest of the nation and to ensure that students remain focused on their education instead of becoming entangled in political or legal disputes. He also expressed concern that anti-national elements could exploit the ongoing protests if the situation continued.
Pradhan’s Statement
Pradhan emphasized that he has spent more than four decades working for students, teachers, and educational reforms. He stated that his commitment has always been to build a strong, inclusive, and future-oriented education system, describing it as the foundation of a developed nation.
He thanked Prime Minister Narendra Modi for giving him the opportunity to serve the country and reaffirmed his dedication to public service.
Background of the NEET-UG 2026 Controversy
The controversy began after the NEET-UG examination held on May 3, 2026, was found to have alleged irregularities. The Government of India immediately ordered a Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) probe into the matter and cancelled the examination.
Authorities later announced a re-examination, which was successfully conducted on June 21, 2026, with the cooperation of state governments, district administrations, students, and parents. More than 2 million (20 lakh) students participated in the examination.
The government also decided that beginning next year, the NEET examination will be conducted in a Computer-Based Test (CBT) format to improve transparency and reduce the risk of malpractice.
Responsibility and Commitment
Pradhan said he accepted responsibility for the crisis from the very beginning and remained committed to ensuring that deserving students did not suffer because of the actions of exam mafias or fraudulent networks.
He noted that the NEET-UG 2026 results, declared on July 16, showed satisfactory outcomes, with many talented students from economically weaker backgrounds achieving success. However, he claimed that certain individuals in influential positions continued to create obstacles and mislead students, which he described as deeply disappointing.

In his message to young people, Pradhan described India’s youth as the country’s greatest strength and future architects. He urged students to remain committed to their studies and careers while maintaining faith in India’s democratic institutions.
According to his letter, his resignation was intended to preserve national unity, prevent further unrest, and protect students from unnecessary legal complications.
Political Reaction
Following the resignation, Abhijeet Deepke, founder of the Cockroach Janata Party (CJP), welcomed the decision, calling it a “victory for democracy.” He stated that citizens should not fear standing up to those in power and claimed that sustained public pressure had led to the minister’s resignation.
