Erbil, Iraq | A series of powerful explosions shook the northern Iraqi city of Erbil early Tuesday, including blasts reported near the U.S. Consulate, as suspected Iranian drone attacks targeted multiple locations across the region, according to local media and security sources.
Reports from Al Jazeera, citing Iraqi police sources, said that at least seven explosions were heard across Erbil. Some of the blasts occurred in areas close to the U.S. diplomatic compound, raising concerns about the security situation in Iraq’s semi-autonomous Kurdistan Region.
Suspected Drone Strikes Hit Multiple Locations
According to police sources, at least four suspected Iranian drones targeted sites in the Khalifan and Soran districts, located northeast of Erbil. The attacks reportedly triggered large fires, while two drones crashed near the intended target areas.
Local authorities said emergency crews were deployed to contain the fires and assess the extent of the damage. No official casualty figures had been released at the time of reporting.
Heightened U.S. Military Activity
Following the explosions, police sources told Al Jazeera that more than ten American military aircraft and surveillance drones were observed flying over Erbil, indicating a significant increase in U.S. military activity in response to the security threat.
Separately, Iran’s state broadcaster IRIB, citing Iraqi sources, reported that an American drone had been destroyed in Al Anbar Province. Local media also published images that allegedly showed the wreckage of a U.S. drone near the Haditha Dam. These claims have not been independently verified.
Attack Reported on Gas Field
IRIB also reported that the strategically important Khor Mor Gas Field near Sulaymaniyah came under attack during the wave of military activity. The gas field is considered a critical energy asset for Iraq’s Kurdistan Region.
Officials have not yet confirmed the full extent of the damage or identified those responsible for the reported strike.
Diplomatic Efforts Continue Amid Rising Tensions
The latest attacks come as U.S. President Donald Trump said that the United States remains engaged in intensive diplomatic discussions with Iran but is prepared to resume strong military action if negotiations fail.
According to reports, Trump said he had temporarily paused planned military strikes to allow diplomatic efforts another opportunity to succeed.
“We are in very serious talks with Iran. If they don’t succeed, we will return to very tough military action,” Trump was quoted as saying.
He also indicated that the window for diplomacy would be limited, adding that negotiations must progress quickly or risk collapsing.
