Offline UPI Payments Set to Become Reality: New NFC-Based Feature to Enable Transactions Without Internet

New Delhi : In a major boost for India’s digital payment ecosystem, customers may soon be able to make UPI payments without an active internet connection. According to recent reports, the National Payments Corporation of India (NPCI) is preparing a new offline UPI payment system that will allow users to pay merchants through Point-of-Sale (PoS) terminals, even when both the customer’s phone and the merchant’s terminal are temporarily offline.

The upcoming feature is expected to significantly improve payment convenience in areas with poor or no internet connectivity, including aircraft cabins, underground metro networks, remote villages, and disaster-affected regions.

How the Offline UPI Feature Will Work

To use the service, customers will first need to load funds into their UPI Lite wallet while connected to the internet. Once the balance is available, they can make offline payments simply by tapping their NFC-enabled smartphone on a compatible PoS terminal.

The transaction will not require a UPI PIN for eligible payments and is expected to support transactions of up to ₹2,000. The PoS terminal will securely store the payment authorization while offline and automatically process it once internet connectivity is restored.

The entire system will rely on Near Field Communication (NFC) technology, ensuring quick, secure, and seamless offline transactions.

NPCI May Begin Certification in 2026

Reports indicate that NPCI could begin certifying compatible PoS devices from major terminal manufacturers during 2026. Once certified, merchants using these terminals will be able to accept payments even during temporary internet outages, reducing transaction failures and improving customer experience.

How It Differs from UPI Lite X

The new system builds upon UPI Lite X, introduced by NPCI in September 2023, which enabled offline person-to-person (P2P) payments between NFC-enabled smartphones and supported QR-code or soundbox-based transactions without mobile connectivity.

However, the proposed feature represents a significant upgrade by extending offline payment capability to traditional certified PoS terminals. This means merchants can continue accepting digital payments even when their payment machines lose internet access, making offline commerce far more practical.

American Experts Welcome the Innovation

Michael Roberts, a U.S.-based fintech analyst, described the initiative as “a major advancement in offline digital payments.” He noted that expanding payment capability beyond internet-dependent systems could improve transaction reliability in transportation, tourism, and emergency situations.

Meanwhile, Emily Carter, an American digital banking consultant, said the technology demonstrates how India continues to lead global payment innovation. According to Carter, combining UPI Lite, NFC technology, and offline PoS infrastructure could become a model that other countries may consider adopting for resilient digital payment systems.

Why This Matters

If implemented nationwide, the feature could offer several benefits:

  • Reliable payments in areas with weak or unavailable internet.
  • Faster checkout through tap-and-pay NFC technology.
  • Improved convenience for travelers, commuters, and rural users.
  • Greater business continuity for merchants during network disruptions.
  • Enhanced adoption of digital payments across underserved regions.

The proposed offline UPI payment feature marks another important step in India’s journey toward a more inclusive, resilient, and cashless digital economy, ensuring that digital transactions remain possible even when internet connectivity is unavailable.
