New Delhi, India | A political controversy has erupted after a video showing Chhatra Janata Party (CJP) spokespersons Sourav Das and Ashutosh Ranka, along with supporters, celebrating the resignation of Union Education Minister Dharmendra Pradhan, surfaced on social media. The footage has drawn sharp criticism from the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP), with party leaders describing the celebrations as “deeply insensitive” and inappropriate given the serious issues that had formed the basis of the student-led protests.
The controversy follows weeks of demonstrations demanding educational reforms and accountability, with student concerns and reported suicides cited by protest organizers as key motivations for the movement.
BJP Calls Celebration ‘Insensitive’
Reacting to the viral video, BJP IT Cell Head Amit Malviya questioned the timing and nature of the celebration.
According to Malviya, while everyone has the right to relax and celebrate after completing difficult work, there is an appropriate time and place for such celebrations.
He argued that when a movement is presented as a struggle for justice for students, particularly one invoking the tragic deaths of students by suicide, public celebrations immediately afterward create a stark and uncomfortable contrast.
Malviya described the scenes as “deeply insensitive”, comparing them to “dancing at someone’s funeral while claiming to mourn their loss.”
Questions Raised Over the Student Movement
The BJP leader further stated that the celebration video raises important questions about the objectives of the protest movement.
He asked whether the thousands of students who participated in demonstrations at Jantar Mantar believing they were supporting meaningful educational reform might now question whether their emotions had been used for political purposes instead.
According to Malviya, the images suggest that the movement concluded with celebration rather than reflection, adding that “the youth of this country deserve sincerity, not spectacle.”
Previous Viral Video Added to the Debate
The latest controversy comes shortly after another viral video involving former CJP spokesperson Vijeta Dahiya.
Dahiya had previously drawn public attention after videos circulated online showing him dancing on stage and, in another incident, eating a burger during a Parliament march. Following those incidents, the CJP removed him from his position as spokesperson.
Malviya said that the latest visuals involving CJP founder Abhijeet Dipke’s associates, including Sourav Das and Ashutosh Ranka, have intensified public scrutiny of the organization.

The controversy has fueled renewed political debate over the conduct of protest leaders, the messaging surrounding student movements, and the balance between political expression and public sensitivity.
