Visakhapatnam : In a major boost to India’s maritime defense capabilities and the Aatmanirbhar Bharat initiative, Hindustan Shipyard Limited (HSL) has successfully delivered the second indigenous Diving Support Vessel (DSV), ‘Nipun’, to the Indian Navy. The vessel was formally handed over on July 30, 2026, in Visakhapatnam.
The delivery marks another significant milestone in India’s indigenous naval shipbuilding program, reinforcing the country’s commitment to developing advanced defense platforms with a high degree of domestic manufacturing and technological expertise.
Designed and Built in India
The Diving Support Vessel ‘Nipun’ has been designed and constructed by Hindustan Shipyard Limited in accordance with the Classification Rules of the Indian Register of Shipping (IRS), ensuring that the vessel meets stringent national standards for safety, reliability, and operational performance.
The ship features nearly 75% indigenous content, highlighting India’s growing self-reliance in defense manufacturing and supporting the Government of India’s Aatmanirbhar Bharat vision of reducing dependence on imported defense equipment.
Meaning Behind the Name ‘Nipun’
The name ‘Nipun’ is derived from Sanskrit, where it means “one who is adept, capable, skilled, and well-versed in a particular discipline.”
The vessel’s name reflects its specialized role in carrying out complex underwater missions, rescue operations, and technical diving tasks that require advanced capabilities and precision.
Advanced Deep-Sea Diving Capabilities
Designed as a highly specialized naval platform, Nipun is equipped to undertake a wide range of deep-sea diving operations, underwater maintenance tasks, and maritime rescue missions.
Among its key capabilities are:
- Deep Sea Saturation Diving for prolonged underwater operations.
- State-of-the-art diving equipment supporting professional diving missions.
- A dedicated side diving stage for safe and efficient diver deployment.
- Remotely Operated Vehicles (ROVs) capable of underwater surveillance, diver monitoring, inspection, and salvage operations.
These advanced systems significantly enhance the Indian Navy’s ability to conduct underwater engineering tasks, search-and-recovery missions, and emergency response operations in challenging maritime environments.
Critical Role in Submarine Rescue Operations
One of the vessel’s most significant operational roles will be serving as the Mother Ship for the Deep Submergence Rescue Vessel (DSRV).
The DSRV is a specialized rescue system designed to save the lives of submariners trapped inside disabled submarines during underwater emergencies.
By acting as the operational platform for the Deep Submergence Rescue Vessel, Nipun will play a crucial role in:
- Submarine rescue operations
- Emergency evacuation of submarine personnel
- Deployment and recovery of rescue systems
- Support for underwater search and rescue missions
This capability substantially strengthens the Indian Navy’s preparedness to respond to submarine emergencies and enhances crew safety during underwater operations.
Boost to Indigenous Naval Shipbuilding
The successful delivery of Nipun represents another major achievement for Hindustan Shipyard Limited, one of India’s premier defense shipyards.
With approximately 75% indigenous content, the vessel demonstrates the growing capability of Indian industry to design, engineer, and manufacture sophisticated naval platforms domestically.
The project also contributes to:
- Strengthening India’s indigenous defense manufacturing ecosystem
- Promoting self-reliance in strategic technologies
- Reducing dependence on imported naval equipment
- Enhancing domestic shipbuilding expertise
- Supporting employment and technological innovation in the defense sector
Enhancing India’s Maritime Security
The induction of Nipun into the Indian Navy significantly enhances the Navy’s operational readiness in the specialized field of deep-sea diving, underwater maintenance, salvage operations, and submarine rescue.
As India’s maritime interests continue to expand across the Indian Ocean Region, specialized support vessels like Nipun will play a vital role in ensuring operational safety, protecting underwater assets, and responding effectively to complex underwater emergencies.
The delivery of the vessel reflects India’s continued progress toward building a modern, technologically advanced, and self-reliant naval force, while reinforcing the strategic objectives of Aatmanirbhar Bharat and strengthening the nation’s maritime defense capabilities.
