Bomb Threat Email Sent to ISRO Headquarters in Bengaluru; Search Finds No Explosives

Bengaluru, July 2, 2026: India’s premier space agency, the Indian Space Research Organisation (ISRO) was placed on high alert on Thursday after its headquarters in Bengaluru received a bomb threat email, prompting an immediate security response.

According to Bengaluru Police, the threatening email was received at the office of the ISRO Chairman during the afternoon. Following the alert, authorities swiftly evacuated parts of the ISRO campus and launched a comprehensive search operation.

Teams from the Bomb Detection and Disposal Squad (BDDS), local police, and other security personnel thoroughly inspected the premises for any suspicious objects or explosive devices. No explosives or suspicious materials were found, and officials later declared the threat to be a hoax.

A senior police official confirmed that the extensive search operation concluded without finding anything dangerous. The Sanjay Nagar Police Station has registered the matter and initiated an investigation to identify the person responsible for sending the threatening email.

North Bengaluru Deputy Commissioner of Police (DCP) Babasab Nemagouda said:

Around the afternoon, ISRO headquarters, under the jurisdiction of Sanjay Nagar Police Station, received a bomb threat. Our officers immediately rushed to the premises and carried out a thorough search. Nothing suspicious was found. ISRO officials are filing a formal complaint, and we will proceed with further investigation.

Investigators from the Cyber Crime Unit are now tracing the email’s IP address, examining its origin, and working to identify the sender and determine the motive behind the threat. Police said the investigation is being conducted in coordination with other security and intelligence agencies.

The incident was treated with the highest level of seriousness because ISRO Headquarters is considered one of India’s most strategic and sensitive scientific establishments. The organization oversees several high-profile national space programs, including the Chandrayaan lunar missions, the Gaganyaan human spaceflight program, and multiple satellite and launch vehicle projects that are critical to India’s space ambitions.

Although the threat ultimately proved to be false, authorities emphasized that every threat against critical national infrastructure is investigated thoroughly to ensure public safety and national security.

Police have appealed to the public to avoid spreading rumors and said legal action will be taken against the individual responsible for the hoax once identified. The investigation remains ongoing.
