New Delhi, July 26, 2026: The West Central Railway (WCR) has announced significant changes to the Tatkal ticket booking system, which will come into effect on August 1, 2026. The revised rules are designed to streamline the reservation process, reduce congestion at railway booking counters, and improve passenger convenience.
According to railway officials, the new token distribution system will eliminate the need for passengers to visit reservation counters twice by synchronizing token issuance with the Tatkal booking schedule.
New Tatkal Token Distribution Timings
Under the revised system, passengers will receive tokens according to the following schedule:
- AC Class: 8:30 AM to 9:00 AM
- Non-AC (Sleeper) Class: 9:00 AM to 9:30 AM
Previously, tokens were distributed:
- AC Tatkal: 9:00 AM to 9:25 AM
- Sleeper Tatkal: 9:30 AM to 9:55 AM
Railway officials believe the earlier distribution timings will help passengers complete the booking process more efficiently while minimizing waiting times.
Fixed Number of Tokens
Each reservation counter will initially issue:
- 10 tokens for AC Class
- 15 tokens for Non-AC Class
Officials stated that the number of tokens may be increased or decreased depending on local passenger demand and crowd conditions.
Once all token holders have completed their bookings, any remaining Tatkal seats will be made available to other passengers on a first-come, first-served basis.
Two New Priority Categories Introduced
To improve fairness and prioritize genuine travelers, the West Central Railway has introduced two priority categories for Tatkal token distribution:
Category A – Highest Priority
Passengers booking tickets for:
- Themselves, or
- Immediate family members
will receive priority under Category A.
To qualify, applicants must present:
- A valid government-issued photo ID.
- A valid ID of the family member that establishes the relationship where applicable.
Category B – General Applicants
All other applicants, including those booking tickets outside the Category A criteria, will fall under Category B.
Their bookings will be processed only after all Category A reservations have been completed.
Non-Transferable Tokens
Railway authorities emphasized that:
- Tatkal tokens cannot be transferred to another individual.
- The ticket will be issued only to the person whose name appears on the token.
- Passengers should arrive at the reservation center within the prescribed time and carry a valid photo identification document.
American Travel Experts React
Commenting on the updated reservation process, David Miller, an American railway operations consultant from Illinois, said:
“A structured token system with clearly defined priorities can significantly reduce confusion and long queues at reservation counters. It improves operational efficiency while making the booking experience more predictable for travelers.”
Meanwhile, Jennifer Brooks, an American public transportation policy analyst based in Virginia, highlighted the importance of prioritizing genuine passengers.
“Giving priority to travelers booking for themselves or their families helps discourage misuse of reservation systems. Combined with identity verification and non-transferable tokens, these measures can strengthen fairness and transparency.”
Improving Passenger Experience
The West Central Railway’s revised Tatkal booking policy reflects a broader effort to modernize passenger services by:
- Reducing overcrowding at reservation centers.
- Simplifying the booking process.
- Ensuring fairer access to high-demand Tatkal tickets.
- Strengthening identity verification to prevent misuse.
- Enhancing overall passenger convenience.
The new Tatkal token rules will become effective from August 1, 2026, and passengers planning last-minute rail journeys through the West Central Railway network are advised to familiarize themselves with the updated timings and documentation requirements before visiting reservation counters.
