NTPC CMD Interview 2026: 18 Candidates Face Search Committee for India’s Top Power Sector Job

New Delhi, : NTPC Limited, India’s largest power generation company, has reached a crucial stage in selecting its next Chairman and Managing Director (CMD). The Search-cum-Selection Committee (SCSC) is conducting interviews today, July 4, 2026, with 18 shortlisted candidates competing for one of the most influential leadership positions in the country’s energy sector.

The successful candidate will replace Gurdeep Singh, whose extended tenure as CMD concludes on July 31, 2026. The newly appointed chief is expected to assume office on August 1, 2026, subject to final approval from the Appointments Committee of the Cabinet (ACC).

Selection Process in Progress

The interviews are being held between 9:00 AM and 11:00 AM under the supervision of the Search-cum-Selection Committee. Following the interviews, the panel will recommend its preferred candidate to the ACC, which will make the final appointment.

The position is regarded as one of the most significant leadership roles in India’s public sector, as NTPC remains the country’s largest electricity producer and a key player in the government’s clean energy transition.

18 Senior Leaders in the Race

The shortlist includes a diverse group of experienced professionals from across India’s energy industry, including:

  • Executive Directors from NTPC and leading public sector companies such as Indian Oil Corporation (IOC), GAIL (India) Limited, Power Grid Corporation of India (PGCIL), and Power Finance Corporation (PFC).
  • Serving Directors from NTPC, Gujarat Urja Vikas Nigam Limited (GUVNL), and Indian Oil Corporation.
  • Senior executives from state-owned utilities.
  • Dipesh Nanda, former Managing Director of Tata Power, representing the private sector.

The wide-ranging candidate pool reflects the government’s intention to identify a leader with strong expertise in power generation, renewable energy, infrastructure development, and corporate leadership.

Why the Selection Process Changed

The current recruitment process follows an earlier attempt by the Public Enterprises Selection Board (PESB) that did not result in the selection of a suitable candidate. The government subsequently initiated a fresh application process and transferred the appointment to the Search-cum-Selection Committee, allowing a broader and more competitive search for the country’s next power sector leader.

Major Challenges for the Next CMD

The incoming CMD will inherit leadership of a company that is central to India’s energy security and clean energy ambitions. Key priorities will include:

  • Expanding power generation capacity
  • Accelerating renewable energy projects
  • Strengthening grid reliability
  • Ensuring long-term fuel security
  • Driving operational efficiency
  • Supporting India’s target of achieving 500 GW of non-fossil fuel energy capacity

Legacy of Gurdeep Singh

Since taking charge in 2016, Gurdeep Singh has overseen significant expansion at NTPC, including rapid growth in solar, wind, and green energy initiatives while maintaining the company’s leadership in conventional power generation.

The next CMD will be expected to build on these achievements while steering NTPC through an increasingly competitive and rapidly evolving energy landscape.

What Happens Next?

After today’s interviews conclude, the Search-cum-Selection Committee will finalize its recommendation and forward the selected name to the Appointments Committee of the Cabinet (ACC) for approval. If the process proceeds as expected, NTPC is likely to have its new Chairman and Managing Director in place from August 1, 2026.

Industry observers believe the appointment will play a critical role in shaping the future direction of NTPC and influencing India’s broader energy transition, power infrastructure development, and clean energy strategy over the coming years.
