Dr. Komal Kapoor Assumes Charge as Chairman & Managing Director of ECIL

NEW DELHI : Dr. Komal Kapoor, an eminent Distinguished Scientist and Metallurgical Engineer, has officially assumed charge as the Chairman & Managing Director (CMD) and Director (Technical) of Electronics Corporation of India Limited (ECIL). The appointment marks a significant leadership transition for the Schedule ‘A’ Miniratna Category-I Central Public Sector Enterprise (CPSE) operating under the Department of Atomic Energy (DAE), Government of India.

Dr. Kapoor takes over the leadership of ECIL after serving as the Chief Executive of the Nuclear Fuel Complex (NFC), where he played a pivotal role in strengthening India’s nuclear fuel production capabilities and supporting the country’s expanding civil nuclear power program.

A Distinguished Career in India’s Nuclear Sector

Dr. Kapoor began his professional journey by joining the prestigious 33rd Batch of the BARC Training School in Mumbai in 1989. Following the completion of his training, he was posted to the Nuclear Fuel Complex (NFC), where he served in various scientific, technical, and leadership roles for more than three decades.

Throughout his career, he has made significant contributions to the development of nuclear materials, fuel fabrication technologies, and advanced metallurgical research, earning recognition as one of India’s leading experts in the field.

Strong Academic Credentials

Dr. Kapoor holds a Doctorate (Ph.D.) in Metallurgical Engineering and Materials Science from the Indian Institute of Technology (IIT) Bombay, one of India’s premier engineering institutions.

In addition to his administrative responsibilities, he has remained actively engaged in academic and research activities.

He currently serves as:

  • Adjunct Professor at the Homi Bhabha National Institute (HBNI), Mumbai
  • Guest Faculty at the University of Hyderabad (UoH)

His academic involvement has helped mentor researchers and contribute to the advancement of nuclear engineering education in India.

As the head of three Nuclear Fuel Cycle Facilities, Dr. Kapoor has played a critical role in supporting the Indian Nuclear Power Programme.

Among his most significant responsibilities is overseeing the establishment of a large Greenfield Nuclear Fuel Project at Kota, Rajasthan, which is designed to meet the fuel requirements of India’s upcoming fleet of nuclear reactors.
