Chhattisgarh to Receive ₹11,664 Crore Grant for Rural Local Bodies Under 16th Finance Commission Recommendations


New Delhi/Raipur: The Government of Chhattisgarh is set to receive ₹11,664 crore (approximately $1.35 billion) in grants for its Rural Local Bodies (RLBs) under the 16th Finance Commission’s recommendations for the 2026–27 to 2030–31 period. The funding is aimed at strengthening Panchayats, improving rural infrastructure, and enhancing local governance across the state.

The announcement was made during a National Workshop on the 16th Finance Commission Recommendations, held in New Delhi, where Chhattisgarh Deputy Chief Minister and Minister for Panchayat and Rural Development Vijay Sharma participated alongside state ministers, senior government officials, policy experts, and administrators from across India.

Focus on Financial Empowerment of Rural Local Governments

The workshop focused on enhancing the financial autonomy of local self-governments, improving public service delivery, promoting transparency and accountability, and implementing a more effective performance-based grant system for Panchayats.

During the technical sessions, Deputy Chief Minister Vijay Sharma reviewed presentations and participated in discussions on key issues related to rural governance, local administration, and the implementation of the 16th Finance Commission’s recommendations.

Grant Allocation for Chhattisgarh

According to the Commission’s proposed recommendations, Chhattisgarh will receive a total of ₹11,664 crore over five financial years.

The allocation includes:

  • ₹9,331 crore as Basic Grants
  • ₹2,333 crore as Performance-Based Grants

The Commission has also fixed Chhattisgarh’s share at 2.68% in the inter-state distribution of grants for Rural Local Bodies.

Year-Wise Grant Distribution

The proposed annual allocation is as follows:

  • 2026–27: ₹1,498 crore in Basic Grants
  • 2027–28: ₹1,663 crore in Basic Grants and ₹248 crore in Performance Grants
  • 2028–29: ₹1,846 crore in Basic Grants and ₹624 crore in Performance Grants
  • 2029–30: ₹2,049 crore in Basic Grants and ₹693 crore in Performance Grants
  • 2030–31: ₹2,275 crore in Basic Grants and ₹768 crore in Performance Grants

Boost for Rural Development

The financial assistance is expected to play a significant role in developing rural infrastructure, expanding essential public services, and improving civic amenities through Gram Panchayats and other Rural Local Bodies.

The grants will support projects related to roads, drinking water, sanitation, community infrastructure, and other development initiatives designed to improve the quality of life in rural areas.

The recommendations of the 16th Finance Commission are intended to make local governments more financially independent, encourage better governance, and ensure that public funds are utilized efficiently to accelerate inclusive rural development across Chhattisgarh.
