Durg, Chhattisgarh |: In a major action against the illegal liquor trade, the Durg Police destroyed 5,480.082 bulk litres of seized illicit liquor worth approximately ₹45 lakh. The destruction was carried out after the completion of all judicial formalities and in accordance with the provisions of the Excise Act, under the supervision of a committee constituted by the District Collector.
The large-scale disposal of seized liquor is aimed at ensuring the safe disposal of confiscated materials, preventing their misuse, and maintaining better conditions at police stations.
Liquor Seized in 112 Cases Destroyed
According to police officials, the liquor destroyed had been confiscated in 112 cases registered under the Excise Act across various police stations and outposts in Durg district.
The total quantity of liquor destroyed amounted to 5,480.082 bulk litres, with an estimated current market value of around ₹45 lakh.
The destruction process was conducted in compliance with court orders and legal procedures after all necessary judicial proceedings had been completed.
Destruction Conducted Under Official Supervision
The operation was carried out in the Jamul Police Station area in the presence of the Liquor Destruction Committee constituted by the District Collector.
Officials ensured that the entire process followed the prescribed legal framework to maintain transparency and accountability in the disposal of seized contraband.
Police Cite Hygiene and Safety Concerns
Additional Superintendent of Police (ASP) Bhojraj Agrawal said that the seized liquor had been stored at various police stations for an extended period.
He explained that prolonged storage had created unpleasant odour inside police premises, causing inconvenience to both police personnel and members of the public visiting police stations to lodge complaints or seek assistance.
To address these issues, the authorities decided to destroy the confiscated liquor after obtaining the required judicial approvals.
Objective of the Operation
According to the police, the primary objectives behind the destruction drive were:
- Ensuring strict compliance with court orders
- Safely disposing of seized illegal liquor
- Freeing storage space at police stations
- Eliminating the possibility of reuse or illegal circulation of confiscated liquor
- Maintaining hygiene and improving working conditions inside police premises
Officials emphasized that the action also strengthens law enforcement efforts against the illegal manufacture, transportation, and sale of liquor.

ASP Bhojraj Agrawal stated that the destruction of the seized liquor demonstrates the Durg Police’s commitment to enforcing the law and taking stringent action against those involved in the illegal liquor business.
