New Delhi: Japanese Prime Minister Sanae Takaichi arrived in New Delhi on Wednesday for a three-day official visit to India from July 1 to July 3, 2026, marking her first official visit to the country since assuming office. The visit is expected to further strengthen the India–Japan Special Strategic and Global Partnership, with both nations seeking deeper cooperation in investment, semiconductor manufacturing, advanced technology, defense, and economic security.
According to India’s Ministry of External Affairs (MEA), Prime Minister Takaichi will participate in the 16th India–Japan Annual Summit with Prime Minister Narendra Modi, where the two leaders are expected to review the full spectrum of bilateral relations and discuss key regional and global issues of mutual interest.
Investment and Semiconductor Cooperation in Focus
The visit is expected to result in new initiatives aimed at boosting Japanese investment in India and expanding collaboration in innovation, advanced manufacturing, and high-technology industries.
A major focus will be on strengthening semiconductor supply chains, securing critical minerals, and enhancing economic security, reflecting the shared objective of reducing global supply chain vulnerabilities.
Officials believe the summit could pave the way for new investments in semiconductor manufacturing and related industries, supporting India’s ambition to become a global electronics and chip production hub.
Defense, Maritime Security, and Regional Connectivity
Diplomatic sources said both countries will also discuss expanding cooperation in maritime security, defense technology, and the development of an industrial value chain connecting the Bay of Bengal with Northeast India.
The discussions are expected to reinforce strategic coordination in the Indo-Pacific region, where both India and Japan advocate a rules-based international order, freedom of navigation, and regional stability.
Business Forum and Green Energy Initiatives
Prime Minister Takaichi is also scheduled to participate in the India–Japan Business Forum, where several economic initiatives may be announced.
According to diplomatic sources, potential agreements include:
- Artificial Intelligence (AI) cooperation
- A large-scale Green Ammonia Project in Odisha
- Expanded collaboration in biogas development
- Stronger partnerships in clean energy and regional resilience
The summit is also expected to cover sectors such as renewable energy, pharmaceuticals, battery manufacturing, and critical minerals, which have become strategic priorities for both nations.
Possible Agreements and Joint Statement
Officials indicated that the visit could conclude with the signing of a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) and the release of a Joint Statement, outlining future cooperation across multiple sectors.
The visit follows Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s trip to Tokyo in August 2025 for the 15th India–Japan Annual Summit, where both countries established a roadmap for the next decade centered on security, economic growth, investment, innovation, and people-to-people exchanges.
Strengthening the India–Japan Strategic Partnership
India and Japan upgraded their relationship to a Special Strategic and Global Partnership in 2014, and bilateral ties have continued to expand across trade, infrastructure, defense, technology, and clean energy.
Officials also noted that Japan’s updated “Free and Open Indo-Pacific (FOIP)” strategy identifies India as a key partner in promoting a stable, secure, and prosperous Indo-Pacific region based on international law and shared democratic values.
