Bikaner, Rajasthan : Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Saturday inaugurated SJVN Limited’s 1,000 MW Bikaner Solar Power Project, one of India’s largest renewable energy developments, marking a major milestone in the country’s transition toward clean energy, energy security, and climate sustainability.
The project was inaugurated from Pachpadra, Rajasthan, in the presence of several senior leaders, including Rajasthan Governor Haribhau Kisanrao Bagde, Chief Minister Bhajan Lal Sharma, Union Power Minister Manohar Lal, Union Petroleum and Natural Gas Minister Hardeep Singh Puri, Union Minister of State Arjun Ram Meghwal, and Rajasthan Deputy Chief Ministers Diya Kumari and Prem Chand Bairwa. Senior officials from SJVN and its renewable energy subsidiary SJVN Green Energy Limited (SGEL) also participated virtually.
Developed by SGEL, the 1,000 MW solar power project has been built in Bikaner, Rajasthan, with an investment of approximately ₹5,492 crore (about $640 million). Spread across nearly 5,000 acres, it is recognized as India’s largest single-location Engineering, Procurement, and Construction (EPC) solar project under the Domestic Content Requirement (DCR) category, highlighting the country’s growing capabilities in indigenous renewable energy infrastructure.
According to SJVN, the solar facility is expected to generate approximately 2,454.84 million units (MU) of electricity during its first year of operation and nearly 56,482.14 MU over its projected 25-year operational lifespan. The electricity generated will be supplied to Rajasthan (500 MW), Uttarakhand (200 MW), and Jammu & Kashmir (300 MW), strengthening India’s clean power grid and ensuring a reliable supply of renewable electricity.
The project is also expected to deliver significant environmental benefits by reducing nearly 2.79 billion kilograms of carbon dioxide emissions over its lifetime, supporting India’s commitments to carbon reduction, climate action, and its long-term net-zero emissions goals.
A major feature of the project is its focus on the “Make in India” and “Atmanirbhar Bharat (Self-Reliant India)” initiatives. Construction utilized approximately 2.422 million domestically manufactured DCR solar modules and nearly 17.5 billion indigenous solar cells, providing a major boost to India’s domestic solar manufacturing industry and reducing dependence on imported equipment.
Beyond renewable energy generation, the project has also contributed to regional economic development. During its construction and commissioning phases, it created more than 2,000 direct and indirect jobs, while also improving local infrastructure through the development of roads, power transmission systems, and other supporting facilities in the Bikaner region.
SJVN Limited, a Navratna Central Public Sector Enterprise under the Ministry of Power, currently has an installed generation capacity of 4,196.5 MW and operates 123 kilometers of transmission lines. The successful completion of the Bikaner Solar Power Project significantly strengthens the company’s renewable energy portfolio and reinforces its commitment to supporting India’s vision of a sustainable, low-carbon, and energy-secure future.
The inauguration represents another major step in India’s rapidly expanding renewable energy sector as the country continues investing in large-scale solar infrastructure, clean power generation, and green economic growth while working toward becoming one of the world’s leading producers of renewable energy.
