RANCHI, Jharkhand — India’s clean energy transition received a major boost in eastern India as GAIL (India) Limited hosted a high-level City Gas Distribution (CGD) Infrastructure Review Meeting in Ranchi to accelerate the expansion of Piped Natural Gas (PNG) and Compressed Natural Gas (CNG) networks across Jharkhand.
The meeting was chaired by Anjani Kumar Tiwari, Member (Commercial) of the Petroleum and Natural Gas Regulatory Board (PNGRB), in the presence of R.K. Das, Executive Director and Officer-in-Charge (Eastern Region) at GAIL.
Senior officials from CGD companies operating across Jharkhand, representatives of LPG marketing firms, and PNGRB state-level coordinators participated in the strategic review aimed at strengthening the state’s clean-fuel ecosystem.
Focus on Faster PNG Expansion
The discussions primarily focused on accelerating Domestic PNG (DPNG) connections, expanding gas infrastructure, and increasing public adoption of cleaner fuels in both residential and commercial sectors.
CGD operators presented updates on ongoing pipeline projects, new PNG connections, and future infrastructure development plans aligned with the Government of India’s clean energy objectives.
During the meeting, Tiwari urged CGD entities to increase capital expenditure (CAPEX) and exceed their authorized rollout targets to ensure faster PNG penetration across urban and semi-urban regions of Jharkhand.
Officials also discussed collaborative awareness campaigns with LPG marketing companies to encourage households and housing societies to switch from conventional LPG cylinders to PNG in areas where pipeline infrastructure is already operational.
160th Commercial PNG Connection Inaugurated
As part of the government-backed PNG Drive 2.0 initiative, Tiwari inaugurated the 160th commercial PNG connection at a food court restaurant in Hatia, Ranchi.
The milestone highlights the growing acceptance of natural gas among commercial establishments, including restaurants, hotels, and small businesses seeking cleaner and more cost-effective fuel alternatives.
Industry officials described the achievement as an important indicator of Jharkhand’s expanding gas-based economy.
Policy Discussions with Jharkhand Government
On the sidelines of the review meeting, Tiwari also met with Avinash Kumar, Chief Secretary of the Government of Jharkhand, to discuss policy measures aimed at accelerating clean-fuel adoption in the state.
Key issues discussed included:
- Expanding PNG and CNG usage statewide
- Speeding up approvals for gas infrastructure projects
- Reducing Value Added Tax (VAT) on PNG and CNG to align with neighboring states
- Encouraging greater adoption of CNG-powered vehicles
Officials believe these policy interventions could significantly improve affordability and accelerate infrastructure deployment across Jharkhand.
Push for Sustainable “Waste-to-Energy” Projects
Tiwari also visited GAIL’s Compressed Bio-Gas (CBG) plant in Ranchi, where he reviewed the company’s progress under India’s “Waste-to-Energy” initiative.
The CBG facility converts organic waste into clean fuel and is considered a key component of India’s broader sustainability and carbon-reduction goals.
Officials said the project supports both renewable energy production and effective waste management, strengthening Jharkhand’s emerging green-energy ecosystem.
Coordinated Drive Toward a Cleaner Future
The CGD Infrastructure Review Meeting highlighted growing coordination among regulators, energy companies, and government agencies to accelerate the transition toward cleaner fuels in Jharkhand.
With increased investments, policy support, and expanding infrastructure, the state is expected to witness rapid growth in PNG and CNG adoption over the coming years, supporting India’s long-term environmental and energy-security goals.
