Visakhapatnam, India: In a major milestone for India’s defense manufacturing and maritime security, Mazagon Dock Shipbuilders Limited (MDL) has officially delivered INS Mahendragiri, the fourth Nilgiri-class stealth guided missile frigate, to the Indian Navy under the prestigious Project 17A program. The warship was formally commissioned on July 11, 2026, during a ceremony in Visakhapatnam, attended by Defence Minister Rajnath Singh.
Calling the induction a significant achievement, the Defence Minister said the commissioning of INS Mahendragiri reflects India’s growing strength in indigenous warship construction and reinforces the government’s vision of Atmanirbhar Bharat and Make in India.
A New Generation of Indigenous Stealth Warships
INS Mahendragiri is the fourth stealth frigate built under Project 17A, one of India’s most advanced naval shipbuilding programs. The vessel’s basic design was developed by the Indian Navy’s Warship Design Bureau (WDB), while the detailed engineering, construction, integration, and testing were carried out by Mazagon Dock Shipbuilders Ltd. at its Mumbai shipyard.
The warship represents the latest generation of multi-role stealth frigates, designed to undertake a wide range of missions, including anti-air warfare, anti-surface warfare, anti-submarine warfare, maritime surveillance, escort operations, and protection of strategic sea lanes.
Advanced Technology and Combat Capabilities
Measuring 149 meters in length and displacing approximately 6,400 tonnes, INS Mahendragiri is powered by a Combined Diesel or Gas (CODOG) propulsion system comprising two gas turbines and two diesel engines. This propulsion configuration enables the vessel to achieve speeds of over 28 knots, providing high operational flexibility.
The frigate is equipped with a wide range of advanced combat systems, including:
- State-of-the-art stealth technologies to reduce radar, infrared, and acoustic signatures.
- Modern surveillance and target acquisition sensors.
- Integrated combat management systems.
- Advanced missile and weapon platforms.
- Automated onboard systems that improve operational efficiency and reduce crew workload.
These capabilities significantly enhance the Indian Navy’s ability to conduct missions across diverse maritime environments.
Major Achievement in Shipbuilding Efficiency
According to Mazagon Dock Shipbuilders Ltd., the construction of INS Mahendragiri marks a remarkable improvement in India’s naval shipbuilding capabilities.
The company successfully achieved a 21% reduction in construction time compared to the first vessel of the Nilgiri-class program. Additionally, sea trials and final machinery trials were completed within just two months after basin trials, allowing for a substantially faster delivery schedule.
This demonstrates MDL’s growing expertise in executing complex defense projects with improved efficiency and reduced timelines.
75% Indigenous Content Highlights India’s Manufacturing Strength
One of the most significant achievements of INS Mahendragiri is its approximately 75% indigenous content, underscoring India’s expanding domestic defense industrial base.
The project involved extensive participation from Indian defense manufacturers, Micro, Small and Medium Enterprises (MSMEs), and domestic suppliers. Their contribution has strengthened India’s defense supply chain while promoting technology development, skill enhancement, and employment generation.
The high level of indigenous content also reduces dependence on imported defense equipment and supports the government’s long-term strategy of building a self-reliant defense ecosystem.
MDL’s Growing Contribution to Indian Naval Modernization
Mazagon Dock Shipbuilders has emerged as one of India’s leading defense shipyards. Over the past 16 months, the company has successfully delivered:
- Five warships
- One submarine
to the Indian Navy, highlighting its expanding production capacity and its critical role in India’s naval modernization program.
Strengthening India’s Maritime Security
The induction of INS Mahendragiri significantly boosts the Indian Navy’s operational capabilities in the Indian Ocean Region (IOR). The advanced stealth frigate is expected to improve maritime surveillance, strategic deterrence, mission readiness, and blue-water operational capabilities, enabling India to better safeguard its maritime interests amid evolving regional security challenges.
The commissioning also reinforces India’s position as an emerging global naval power capable of designing and constructing sophisticated frontline warships domestically.
Supporting the Vision of Atmanirbhar Bharat
The delivery of INS Mahendragiri aligns with the Government of India’s continued efforts to promote Atmanirbhar Bharat, expand indigenous defense production, and reduce reliance on foreign military imports.
With every new domestically built warship entering service, India moves closer to achieving greater strategic autonomy while strengthening national security and creating new opportunities for the domestic defense industry.
