RAJNANDGAON, CHHATTISGARH — Chhattisgarh Legislative Assembly Speaker Dr. Raman Singh launched the “One Tree in Mother’s Name” (Ek Ped Maa Ke Naam) campaign in Batgaon village on Saturday, reaffirming the importance of environmental conservation, community participation, and sustainable development. The initiative aims to transform Batgaon into a “Green Village” through large-scale tree plantation and public awareness.
The campaign, organized by the Forest Department, began with the flagging off of a public awareness vehicle, which will travel across nearby areas to educate residents about the importance of tree plantation, biodiversity conservation, and protecting the environment.
2,400 Saplings Distributed, 5,000-Tree Target Announced
As part of the campaign, nearly 2,400 saplings were distributed among local residents to encourage community participation in increasing the region’s green cover.
The Batgaon Gram Panchayat has also announced an ambitious target of planting 5,000 trees in the coming months, with active involvement from villagers and local organizations.
Dr. Raman Singh Plants Fruit and Shade Trees
During the event, Dr. Raman Singh planted several fruit-bearing and shade-providing trees, including mango and jackfruit saplings.
Addressing the gathering, he emphasized that environmental protection is one of the most pressing challenges facing the world today. He noted that India has already surpassed its national target of planting one billion trees, and urged every citizen to plant and nurture at least one tree in honor of their mother.
He said that increasing tree cover is essential for controlling rising temperatures, combating climate change, and ensuring a healthier environment for future generations.
Recognition for Environmental Champions
The program also honored individuals and students for their outstanding contributions to environmental conservation.
Among those recognized were:
- Prateek Thakur, who identified 225 bird species
- Winners of environment-themed essay and painting competitions
- Scouts and Guides students for their participation in environmental awareness activities
The awards highlighted the importance of encouraging youth and local communities to actively participate in conservation efforts.
Development Projects Announced for Batgaon
During his visit, Dr. Raman Singh announced several development initiatives for the village, including financial assistance for:
- Borewell and solar-powered irrigation systems
- Women’s Community Hall
- Mini Stadium
- Children’s Park
- Workshop facilities with an allocation of ₹10 lakh
- Large-scale tree plantation across 30–50 acres, supported with an additional ₹10 lakh
He also directed officials to take strict action against illegal tree cutting, emphasizing that protecting existing forests is as important as planting new trees.
Community Participation at the Core
Batgaon Sarpanch Asha Yadu said the Gram Panchayat has consistently worked in the fields of healthcare, education, and environmental protection, and that public participation will be the key to making the campaign successful.
Meanwhile, Divisional Forest Officer (DFO) Ayush Jain said that extensive plantation drives are being carried out across the district under the Van Mahotsav program to increase green cover and promote ecological balance.
