Bharti Airtel Founder Sunil Bharti Mittal Charts Decade-Long Leadership Transition, Eyes Majority Promoter Control

New Delhi — Sunil Bharti Mittal has unveiled a long-term succession and ownership strategy for Bharti Airtel, signaling a gradual transition of leadership responsibilities to the next generation over the coming decade while simultaneously strengthening promoter control over the telecom giant.

Speaking briefly during the company’s earnings call for the quarter ended March 2026, Mittal said the promoter family intends to increase its effective holding in Bharti Airtel to more than 51% within the next ten years. The move is aimed at consolidating long-term ownership and ensuring strategic stability for one of India’s largest telecommunications companies.

Mittal emphasized that the promoter stake would continue to be consolidated through Bharti Telecom, the founding promoter entity that currently holds a significant stake in Bharti Airtel. According to him, the company plans to rely on two major financial tools — sustained dividend payouts and share buybacks — to gradually raise promoter ownership levels over time.

The veteran telecom entrepreneur described the plan as part of a broader vision to secure continuity in leadership and governance while preparing the organization for its next phase of growth in a rapidly evolving global digital economy.

Focus on Stability and Long-Term Vision

Mittal’s comments come at a time when Bharti Airtel continues to strengthen its position across mobile services, broadband, enterprise connectivity, digital platforms, and international operations. Analysts view the proposed increase in promoter shareholding as a strong signal of confidence in the company’s future prospects.

Industry observers believe that increasing promoter ownership beyond the 51% threshold would provide the promoter group with stronger strategic control, improved decision-making flexibility, and greater insulation from market volatility or external pressures.

The telecom sector in India has undergone massive transformation over the past decade, driven by intense competition, heavy investments in 5G infrastructure, digital services expansion, and rising data consumption. Against this backdrop, Bharti Airtel has emerged as one of the country’s dominant telecom operators with a growing global footprint.

Succession Planning Begins

Mittal also indicated that leadership transition planning is already underway, though he suggested the process would happen gradually and in an organized manner over the next decade. While he did not announce any immediate management changes, his remarks reinforced expectations that the next generation of the Mittal family could take on larger responsibilities in the future.

Corporate governance experts often view such structured succession planning positively, especially in large family-led conglomerates where continuity and strategic alignment are considered critical for long-term investor confidence.

Buybacks and Dividends to Drive Ownership Growth

The strategy outlined by Mittal revolves around what he called “twin levers”:

  • Share Buybacks: Repurchasing shares from the market can reduce the number of outstanding shares, effectively increasing the promoter group’s ownership percentage.
  • Consistent Dividends: Continued dividend payouts can provide promoter entities with additional capital that may be redeployed to acquire more shares over time.

Market experts say this approach allows the promoter group to steadily increase ownership without triggering sudden market disruptions.

Investor Confidence Remains Strong

Bharti Airtel has continued to report solid operational performance, supported by premium customer additions, rising average revenue per user (ARPU), expanding 5G rollout, and growing enterprise demand. Investors are likely to interpret Mittal’s long-term commitment and ownership consolidation plans as a sign of confidence in the company’s growth trajectory.

Mittal, widely regarded as one of the pioneers of India’s telecom revolution, has led Bharti Airtel from a regional mobile operator into a global communications powerhouse operating across multiple countries.

His latest remarks indicate that while leadership may evolve over the next decade, the promoter family intends to maintain a strong and controlling presence in the company’s future.
