New Delhi: In a move aimed at improving passenger convenience and reducing congestion at enquiry counters, Indian Railways has introduced a QR code–based live train information system at Gorakhpur railway station in Uttar Pradesh.
Passengers can now scan a QR code displayed across the station to instantly access a live webpage on their mobile phones. The page automatically refreshes and scrolls, providing real-time updates on train departures, platform numbers, delays, diversions, and cancellations. The same information can also be accessed anytime through a designated web link on any device.
Real-Time, Hassle-Free Travel Updates
The new system allows travelers to check expected departure times and platform details without standing in long queues at enquiry counters. It is especially helpful for daily commuters, who can quickly see the earliest available trains and plan their journeys more efficiently.
Railway officials said the webpage displays the live status of all trains scheduled to depart from Gorakhpur within the next four hours. Trains are organized direction-wise, making it easier for passengers—particularly unreserved travelers—to find relevant information at a glance. Diverted, regulated, or canceled trains are clearly highlighted to avoid last-minute confusion.
Updated Directly by Railway Staff
Railway staff at the divisional headquarters can update the system in real time, including adding new train entries, revising departure times, or marking cancellations and diversions. Station enquiry staff are also responsible for updating platform numbers as required, ensuring passengers receive accurate and timely information.
The system has been developed in-house by the Lucknow Division and replaces the traditional manual whiteboard with a transparent, digital interface.
Passengers Welcome the Initiative
Passengers have welcomed the move, calling it a practical and reliable upgrade. Gorakhpur resident S. K. Chaturvedi said real-time information significantly improves the travel experience, allowing passengers to save time and avoid unnecessary waiting. Frequent traveler Rahish Kashyap from Delhi added that advance updates are particularly useful during winter, when fog often delays trains.
Useful During Peak Rush
Railway officials noted that the system will be especially valuable during peak travel periods, festivals, and large gatherings, when station footfall increases sharply. By providing accurate digital updates, the initiative helps reduce overcrowding at enquiry counters, prevents misinformation, and allows railway staff to focus on safety, crowd management, and operational supervision.
The QR code–based live train information system marks another step toward the digital modernization of Indian railway stations, offering faster access to reliable information while improving overall passenger experience and operational efficiency.
