Fukuoka, Japan — Three people were injured in a knife attack at a public library in the Japanese city of Fukuoka on Thursday evening, police said. None of the victims sustained life-threatening injuries.
Authorities arrested Tatsuo Yoshii, a 61-year-old local resident, on suspicion of attempted murder following the incident, which occurred at the city’s main public library in Sawara Ward around 7:50 p.m.
According to police, Yoshii allegedly slashed the neck of a woman in her 50s. Two other victims—men in their 70s and 80s—were also injured. One of the men was a security guard at the library, while the other two were library patrons.
Investigators said there is no indication that the suspect knew any of the victims. The motive behind the attack remains unclear, and police are continuing their investigation.
Emergency services responded quickly, and the injured individuals were transported to a nearby hospital for treatment. The library was temporarily closed following the incident as authorities secured the area.
Japan is known for its low rate of violent crime, making such attacks rare and deeply concerning for local residents.
