Political Controversy Erupts Over New Education Minister Appointment as Rahul Gandhi and Priyanka Gandhi Raise Allegations

New Delhi | July 28, 2026: A major political controversy has erupted following allegations made by Congress leaders Rahul Gandhi and Priyanka Gandhi Vadra against newly appointed Education Minister Prahlad Joshi. The opposition leaders accused Joshi of having previously supported individuals convicted in the Bilkis Bano case, leading to heated exchanges in Parliament.

The ruling side rejected the allegations, calling them baseless, defamatory and inappropriate, while demanding an apology from the Congress leaders.

Rahul Gandhi Targets Government Over Appointment

Speaking to reporters outside Parliament, Leader of Opposition Rahul Gandhi criticized the appointment of Prahlad Joshi as Education Minister.

Rahul Gandhi alleged that after protests by young people demanding reforms in the education system, the government appointed a person who, according to him, had defended individuals accused in serious crimes.

He said the decision was “unacceptable” and questioned why the government selected Joshi when other leaders could have been given the responsibility.

Rahul Gandhi later posted on social media platform X, claiming that appointing such a person to oversee India’s education system was an insult to students and women.

Priyanka Gandhi’s Remarks in Lok Sabha

The controversy began after Priyanka Gandhi Vadra, during proceedings in the Lok Sabha, referred to a newspaper report related to the Bilkis Bano case and made remarks concerning Prahlad Joshi.

Her comments were objected to by members of the ruling party, who called them unverified and offensive.

Following the objection, the remarks were reportedly removed from the official proceedings of the House.

The issue led to a brief disruption in Parliament as members from both sides exchanged arguments.

Government Rejects Allegations

Parliamentary Affairs Minister Kiren Rijiju strongly objected to the remarks made against the Education Minister.

Rijiju said such comments amounted to character assassination and argued that allegations against an individual should not be made in Parliament without proper verification.

He demanded that if Priyanka Gandhi could not substantiate her claims, she should apologize in the House.

Education Minister Prahlad Joshi Demands Apology

Education Minister Prahlad Joshi responded to the allegations, stating that Priyanka Gandhi could not avoid responsibility after making such statements.

Joshi demanded an apology from the Congress leader and requested action over what he described as unfair accusations.

Meanwhile, Priyanka Gandhi said she would verify and present her position through the appropriate parliamentary process.
