NHPC and IIT Roorkee Develop Inflow Forecasting System for Chamera-III Power Station

New system aims to improve Ravi River inflow forecasting and strengthen hydropower planning and flood preparedness

New Delhi : NHPC Limited has partnered with ICED, IIT Roorkee to develop an advanced Inflow Forecasting System for the Chamera-III Power Station, aimed at improving the forecasting of water inflows into the hydropower project on the Ravi River.

NHPC organised a one-day workshop titled “Development of Inflow Forecasting System for NHPC Chamera-III Power Station” in Faridabad on September 10, 2026. The workshop focused on the forecasting of Ravi River inflows at the Chamera-III Dam and the technical capabilities of the newly developed forecasting model.

NHPC-IIT Roorkee Collaboration

The forecasting system has been developed by NHPC in collaboration with ICED, IIT Roorkee, with the objective of improving the understanding and prediction of river inflows at the hydropower station.

Accurate inflow forecasting can support better operational planning at hydropower projects, particularly during periods of changing river flows and extreme weather conditions.

Experts Present Forecasting Model

During the workshop, experts from ICED, IIT Roorkee presented the inflow forecasting model developed specifically for the Chamera-III Power Station.

The technical sessions also covered issues related to Glacial Lake Outburst Floods (GLOFs) and procedures for collecting and managing hydrological data.

The discussions focused on the importance of reliable hydrological information and forecasting tools for understanding changes in river flows and improving preparedness for extreme water-related events.

Senior NHPC Officials Attend Workshop

The workshop was chaired by Suprakash Adhikari, Director (Technical), NHPC.

It was convened by Prof. N.K. Goyal, Consultant, ICED, IIT Roorkee, along with his team. Officials from NHPC’s Regional Office, Chamera-III Power Station and various engineering, research and development, and operations and maintenance divisions participated in the programme.

The participation of officials from different technical and operational divisions provided a platform for discussions on the practical application of the forecasting system at the power station.

Focus on Better Hydrological Forecasting

The development of the inflow forecasting system is aimed at strengthening NHPC’s ability to anticipate changes in water inflows at Chamera-III.

For a hydropower station, timely information on expected river inflows can assist in operational planning and water management. It can also contribute to improved preparedness during periods of unusually high inflows.

The inclusion of GLOF-related technical discussions in the workshop further highlighted the importance of monitoring and forecasting in regions where hydrological conditions can change rapidly.
