Bilaspur, India : South Eastern Coalfields Limited (SECL) celebrated World Environment Day 2026 with great enthusiasm and dignity at its headquarters in Bilaspur, reaffirming its commitment to environmental conservation, sustainable development, and responsible mining practices.
The event commenced with the hoisting of the Environment Flag by SECL Chairman-cum-Managing Director Harish Duhan, symbolizing the organization’s dedication to protecting natural resources and promoting a greener future. Senior officials, including directors, department heads, employees, and members of Shraddha Mahila Mandal, participated in the celebrations.
Tree Plantation Drive Under โOne Tree in Motherโs Nameโ Campaign
A major highlight of the program was the tree plantation drive conducted under the nationwide campaign โOne Tree in Motherโs Name.โ Led by CMD Harish Duhan, senior executives and representatives planted various fruit-bearing and medicinal saplings in Nehru Shatabdi Nagar Colony.
Participants renewed their commitment toward creating a cleaner, greener, and more sustainable environment, emphasizing the importance of afforestation and ecological balance.
Launch of Annual Environmental Magazine โParyavaran Darpanโ
During the event, SECL officially unveiled its annual environmental magazine, โParyavaran Darpanโ (Environmental Mirror). The publication highlights the companyโs achievements in environmental management, green initiatives, mine reclamation, and sustainable mining practices.
A special documentary film showcasing SECLโs environmental projects, biodiversity conservation efforts, and sustainability programs was also screened for attendees.
Leadership Reaffirms Commitment to Sustainability
Addressing the gathering, Harish Duhan stated that while SECL plays a crucial role in meeting Indiaโs energy demands, it remains equally committed to fulfilling its environmental responsibilities.
He encouraged employees to make environmental protection an integral part of their daily lives and stressed the importance of collective action in preserving nature for future generations.
Director (Human Resources) Biranchi Das administered an Environmental Protection Pledge, through which participants committed themselves to tree plantation, water conservation, protection of natural resources, and environmentally responsible behavior.
Speaking on the occasion, Director (Technical/Planning & Projects) Ramesh Chandra Mahapatra emphasized that true sustainable development can only be achieved when industrial growth and environmental conservation receive equal priority. He reiterated SECLโs commitment to maintaining the highest environmental standards in mining operations.
Students and Cultural Teams Spread Environmental Awareness
The inaugural session featured a welcome song and cultural performances by students from DAV School, highlighting themes of environmental protection and nature conservation.
Adding a creative touch to the awareness campaign, teams from Kusmunda Area and Hasdeo Area presented impactful street plays (Nukkad Natak) focused on environmental conservation messages. Their performances received widespread appreciation from the audience.
Recognition of Environmental Excellence
In his welcome address, General Manager (Environment) B. Rana Pratap outlined the significance of World Environment Day and highlighted SECLโs ongoing efforts in green development, ecological restoration, and environmental compliance.
The message of the Chairman of Coal India Limited for World Environment Day was also read during the ceremony.
To encourage environmental awareness and creativity, SECL honored winners and participants of various competitions organized at the headquarters level, including:

- Poetry Conference
