Auto Driver Vijay Dhamu Pulls Off Stunning Election Victory in Tamil Nadu

Chennai, India: In a remarkable and unexpected outcome from the latest Tamil Nadu Assembly elections, an auto-rickshaw driver has emerged as one of the biggest success stories. Vijay Dhamu, a first-time candidate, secured a decisive victory from the Royapuram constituency, defeating seasoned political heavyweights.

Dhamu contested on a ticket from the political party founded by actor-turned-politician Vijay. His win has drawn widespread attention across the state, symbolizing a shift in voter sentiment toward grassroots leadership and new faces in politics.

A Giant-Killer in Royapuram

Vijay Dhamu received more than 55,000 votes, defeating his closest rival by a margin of approximately 14,000 votes. He triumphed over the Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam (DMK) candidate Subair Khan and pushed five-time legislator D. Jayakumar of the All India Anna Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam (AIADMK) to third place—an outcome few had predicted.

Royapuram, one of Chennai’s politically significant constituencies, has traditionally been dominated by established parties like the DMK and AIADMK. Dhamu’s victory marks a major disruption in that pattern.

From Auto Driver to Lawmaker

Before entering politics, Vijay Dhamu worked as an auto-rickshaw driver and was widely known in his community for his involvement in social activities. For years, he managed a fan club dedicated to actor Vijay, using it as a platform to engage with local residents and address civic issues.

During his campaign, Dhamu emphasized his long-standing grassroots connection, telling voters that while he may be a “new face” in electoral politics, his work at the ground level spans several years.

Backing of Actor Vijay

One of the most talked-about moments of the campaign came when actor Vijay publicly embraced Dhamu after announcing his candidacy. The emotional gesture quickly went viral and is believed to have strengthened Dhamu’s credibility among voters.

Actor Vijay’s political entry and the performance of his party have themselves been a major highlight of the elections, with the party making significant inroads and challenging established leaders, including Chief Minister M. K. Stalin.

Grassroots Strategy Pays Off

Dhamu’s campaign focused on local issues such as basic infrastructure, public services, and community welfare. His low-profile yet consistent engagement with residents helped him build trust, especially among working-class voters.

Political observers say his victory reflects a broader trend in Tamil Nadu politics, where voters are increasingly willing to support candidates with proven local involvement over traditional political figures.

A Symbol of Changing Politics

Vijay Dhamu’s rise from an auto driver to a legislator is being seen as a powerful example of democratic opportunity. His victory not only highlights the influence of grassroots mobilization but also signals a potential shift in Tamil Nadu’s political landscape.

As the state adjusts to these surprising election results, all eyes will be on how first-time leaders like Dhamu perform in office—and whether this marks the beginning of a new era in regional politics.
