HPCL and BPCL Report Mixed Q1 FY27 Results as Revenue Rises but Heavy Losses Weigh on Earnings

MUMBAI, July 22, 2026: India’s leading state-owned oil marketing companies, Hindustan Petroleum Corporation Limited (HPCL) and Bharat Petroleum Corporation Limited (BPCL), reported mixed financial results for the first quarter of FY2026-27 (Q1 FY27) on Tuesday. While both companies recorded strong revenue growth driven by higher fuel sales and improved demand, they also posted significant losses due to compressed marketing margins, elevated global crude oil prices, and continued under-recoveries on regulated fuels.

Despite the challenging quarter, industry analysts believe the two public sector oil companies could witness a gradual recovery in Q2 FY27, provided crude oil prices stabilize, refining margins improve, and fuel marketing margins rebound.

BPCL Reports Strong Revenue Growth but Standalone Loss

Bharat Petroleum Corporation Limited (BPCL) posted revenue of ₹1,59,479 crore, representing a 23% year-over-year increase, reflecting healthy domestic fuel demand and higher sales volumes.

However, the company reported a standalone net loss of ₹3,962 crore, primarily due to shrinking marketing margins and higher input costs.

On a brighter note, BPCL’s consolidated financial performance remained profitable, with the company reporting a Consolidated Profit After Tax (PAT) of ₹5,625 crore, supported by earnings from subsidiaries and other business operations.

HPCL Posts Heavy Consolidated Loss

Hindustan Petroleum Corporation Limited (HPCL) also recorded strong revenue growth during the quarter, although the company did not escape the impact of rising crude prices and weak fuel marketing economics.

HPCL reported a consolidated net loss of ₹12,265 crore, making it one of the most challenging quarters for the company in recent years.

The losses were largely attributed to high crude oil procurement costs, compressed refining and marketing margins, and under-recoveries on LPG and other petroleum products.

Key Challenges Facing Both Oil PSUs

Both HPCL and BPCL faced similar headwinds during the quarter, including:

  • Higher international crude oil prices, increasing raw material costs.
  • Suppressed marketing margins on petrol, diesel, and LPG.
  • Negative buffer due to under-recoveries on subsidized fuel sales.
  • Pressure on profitability despite rising fuel demand.
  • Partial compensation received from the Ministry of Petroleum and Natural Gas (MoPNG) for fuel under-recoveries, although it was insufficient to fully offset losses.

These factors significantly impacted standalone earnings despite healthy operational performance.

Recovery Roadmap: What Could Drive a Turnaround?

Market experts expect conditions to improve in the coming quarters as several positive factors begin to take effect.

1. Better Refining Margins

An improvement in Gross Refining Margins (GRMs) could substantially enhance profitability, particularly if global refining spreads strengthen.

2. Inventory Gains

If international crude prices stabilize or move favorably, both companies may benefit from inventory gains, improving overall financial performance.

3. Fuel Price Adjustments

Potential adjustments in retail fuel prices could help restore healthier marketing margins and reduce pressure on earnings.

4. Rising Domestic Fuel Demand

India’s growing economy continues to support higher consumption of petrol, diesel, aviation fuel, and LPG, providing a positive outlook for sales volumes and refinery utilization.

5. Government Support

The government remains committed to ensuring India’s energy security, with continued support through partial compensation for under-recoveries, helping reduce financial stress on public sector oil companies.

6. Strategic Diversification

Both HPCL and BPCL are accelerating investments in:

  • Petrochemicals
  • Renewable energy projects
  • Green hydrogen initiatives
  • Operational efficiency programs
  • Energy transition technologies

These initiatives are expected to strengthen long-term profitability while reducing dependence on conventional fuel margins.

Market Outlook

Analysts believe Q2 FY27 could mark the beginning of a recovery if global crude oil prices stabilize, marketing margins improve, and government support continues.

Investors are also closely monitoring future policy decisions regarding fuel pricing and subsidy compensation, both of which could significantly influence earnings over the coming quarters.

Stock Market Reaction

Shares of HPCL and BPCL are expected to remain under close investor watch following the quarterly results.

While the near-term earnings outlook remains challenging, many long-term investors continue to view both companies as attractive due to:

  • Strong asset base
  • Strategic importance in India’s energy sector
  • Potential recovery in refining and marketing margins
  • Consistent dividend-paying history
  • Long-term growth opportunities in clean energy and petrochemicals

Overall, the Q1 FY27 results highlight the difficult operating environment faced by India’s oil marketing companies, but the underlying strength in demand, government backing, and strategic investments provide optimism for a gradual recovery in the quarters ahead.
