Dhaka, Bangladesh: In a significant move aimed at strengthening its air defense capabilities, Bangladesh is reportedly planning to purchase 24 Chinese-made J-10CE fighter jets in a deal valued at approximately $2.2 billion, according to a report by Moneycontrol.
The proposed acquisition marks one of the largest defense modernization efforts undertaken by Bangladesh in recent years. The package is expected to include not only the fighter aircraft but also comprehensive pilot training, maintenance services, logistics support, spare parts, and long-term operational assistance.
The J-10CE, an export variant of China’s advanced J-10 multirole combat aircraft, is manufactured by the Chengdu Aircraft Corporation. The fighter jet is capable of reaching speeds close to Mach 1.8 (approximately 1,370 mph or 2,200 km/h) and can carry nearly 5,600 kilograms (12,345 pounds) of weapons and military payloads.
Military analysts describe the aircraft as a highly capable platform equipped with modern avionics, advanced radar systems, and beyond-visual-range combat capabilities. The aircraft can be armed with a variety of air-to-air and air-to-ground missiles, making it suitable for multiple combat missions.
The proposed purchase has attracted regional attention because the same J-10CE fighter jets were reportedly deployed by Pakistan during its military conflict with India in May 2025. The aircraft’s performance during that conflict increased international interest in China’s defense exports and highlighted Beijing’s growing role as a supplier of advanced military equipment.
Defense experts believe the acquisition could significantly enhance the operational capabilities of the Bangladesh Air Force, which has been seeking to modernize its aging fleet and improve its aerial defense infrastructure amid evolving regional security challenges.
While officials from Bangladesh have not yet publicly announced the finalization of the agreement, reports suggest that discussions between Dhaka and Beijing are progressing, with the comprehensive package designed to ensure long-term operational readiness and technical support.
The potential deal also reflects the deepening defense cooperation between Bangladesh and China, which has become one of Dhaka’s key suppliers of military hardware over the past decade.
If approved, the acquisition would represent a major milestone in Bangladesh’s military modernization strategy and further strengthen its air combat capabilities in South Asia.
