Chennai, India: A major political controversy has erupted in Tamil Nadu after Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam (DMK) MLA Markandeyan was arrested over alleged threatening remarks directed at Chief Minister C. Joseph Vijay during a public political meeting in Kovilpatti.
The arrest, which took place in the early hours of Monday, has intensified political tensions in the state, triggering protests by supporters, widespread criticism from opposition leaders, and a formal police investigation.
Controversial Speech Sparks Outrage
The controversy began after a DMK public meeting held on Sunday night at the Krishnan Kovil Grounds in Kovilpatti. The event was chaired by MLA I. Karunanidhi and attended by several senior DMK leaders and party functionaries, including Beekilipatti Murugesan, Radhakrishnan, Jayakannan, Subramanian, Karuppasamy, and Chinnapandian.
While addressing party workers, Markandeyan strongly criticized the leadership of Chief Minister Vijay and commented on recent political developments and the functioning of the Tamil Nadu Legislative Assembly.
Alleged Threat Draws Widespread Condemnation
According to videos that quickly circulated across social media, the MLA allegedly made remarks that were interpreted as a direct threat against the Chief Minister.
He reportedly said that if the Legislative Assembly convened, “your bones will not remain intact,” and further claimed that DMK legislators would “break your bones and send you back.”
The remarks sparked immediate criticism from political leaders and members of the public, with many describing the language as violent, inflammatory, and inappropriate toward a constitutional office-holder. Several opposition leaders demanded swift legal action against the legislator.
Police Arrest and Ongoing Investigation
Following complaints filed over the speech, Tamil Nadu Police arrested Markandeyan from his residence in Vilathikulam early Monday morning.
After being taken into custody, he was escorted for questioning and later brought to the office of the Superintendent of Police as investigators began examining the case.
Authorities have not yet announced the full list of charges, but the investigation remains ongoing.
Supporters Stage Protest
The arrest prompted protests outside the MLA’s residence as DMK supporters gathered and raised slogans against the police action. Some protesters attempted to block the police vehicle transporting the legislator.
Police officers intervened, dispersed the crowd, and cleared the road before safely moving the MLA from the area.
Political Impact
The incident has further intensified the political atmosphere in Tamil Nadu, with the controversy fueling debate over political rhetoric, freedom of speech, and the responsibilities of elected representatives. As the investigation continues, political observers expect the case to remain a significant issue in the state’s political landscape in the coming days.
