Raipur, India: In a major step toward modernizing railway infrastructure monitoring, the Raipur Division of South East Central Railway has begun deploying Artificial Intelligence (AI)-powered drones to inspect Overhead Equipment (OHE) structures.
The initiative aims to strengthen operational safety, reliability, and efficiency in railway operations by integrating advanced technologies into routine infrastructure inspections.
According to railway officials, the Electrical Department of the Raipur Division has introduced state-of-the-art drones capable of conducting detailed inspections of OHE structures, fittings, and other electrical infrastructure from elevated positions. These drones allow engineers to monitor areas that were previously difficult or risky to inspect through traditional manual methods.
High-resolution images and videos captured by the drones are analyzed using AI-based tools, enabling faster and more accurate identification of potential technical defects. The technology helps detect minor faults in OHE components and fittings at an early stage, allowing maintenance teams to take timely corrective action before issues escalate into major technical failures or service disruptions.
Officials said the adoption of AI-assisted drone inspections significantly reduces inspection time while improving the precision of infrastructure monitoring. This ultimately enhances railway safety and ensures smoother and more reliable train operations.
The use of AI and drone technology marks a significant advancement in the modernization of railway maintenance practices. The initiative has been implemented under the guidance of Tarun Prakash, General Manager of South East Central Railway, who has been encouraging the adoption of innovative technologies to strengthen safety standards and operational efficiency across the railway network.
Railway authorities believe that the integration of AI-driven monitoring systems will play a crucial role in improving infrastructure reliability and supporting the long-term modernization of Indian Railways.
