New Delhi: The Union Cabinet, chaired by Prime Minister Narendra Modi, on Friday approved several key decisions, including a major reform in the coal sector and an increase in the Minimum Support Price (MSP) for copra for the 2026 season.
In a significant move aimed at boosting efficiency and transparency in coal usage, the Cabinet approved a new policy for the auction of coal linkages. The policy will be implemented through a newly introduced window named CoalSETU (Coal Sustainable and Transparent Utilisation).
The CoalSETU policy is designed to ensure the seamless, unrestricted, and efficient use of coal across sectors. Under this framework, coal can be utilized for any industrial purpose as well as for exports, providing greater flexibility to industries and strengthening the domestic coal market. The government said the policy is part of a broader series of reforms being undertaken in the coal sector to promote transparency, optimal resource utilization, and ease of doing business.
In addition to the coal sector reforms, the Cabinet also approved an increase in the MSP for copra for the 2026 season. The decision is expected to benefit coconut farmers by ensuring better price realization for their produce and safeguarding their income against market fluctuations.
These decisions reflect the government’s continued focus on economic reforms, industrial growth, and farmer welfare, officials said after the meeting.
