BCCI Announces Two ODI Squads and Test Team for New Zealand Tour; Shreyas Iyer to Lead Final Two ODIs

Shubman Gill will captain India in the first three ODIs, while Shreyas Iyer takes charge for the last two. Jasprit Bumrah returns to the Test squad, and Kumar Kushagra earns his maiden ODI call-up.

NEW DELHI : The Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) has announced India’s ODI and Test squads for the upcoming tour of New Zealand, naming separate teams for the first three and final two matches of the five-game ODI series.

Shubman Gill will lead India in the opening three ODIs, with Shreyas Iyer serving as vice-captain. Iyer will take over the captaincy for the fourth and fifth matches, while Ishan Kishan has been appointed vice-captain for the final two ODIs.

The selection also sees Tilak Varma return to the ODI squad and wicketkeeper-batter Kumar Kushagra receive his maiden call-up to India’s 50-over team. Experienced all-rounders Ravindra Jadeja and Hardik Pandya are absent from the ODI squads, while Mohammed Shami has again been left out.

The BCCI has also announced the Test squad for the two-match series, with Jasprit Bumrah, Akash Deep and Anshul Kamboj among the pace options.

Indiaโ€™s Test Squad: Bumrah Returns, Pant Awaits Fitness Clearance

India’s two-match Test series against New Zealand will begin on November 19, 2026, in Wellington, followed by the second Test in Christchurch from November 27.

Gill will captain the Test side, with KL Rahul named vice-captain. Rishabh Pant has been included as wicketkeeper-batter, subject to fitness clearance, following his recent left-side injury.

Fast bowlers Akash Deep and Anshul Kamboj have also been included. Akash Deep returns after recovering from a lower-back injury, having last played Test cricket during India’s 2025 tour of England. Kamboj returns after making his Test debut in England.

Both players have also been part of the India A squad for the multi-day matches against New Zealand A ahead of the senior team’s Test series.

Jasprit Bumrah has been selected for the Test matches only and will not feature in the ODI series. Prasidh Krishna’s availability is also subject to fitness clearance.

Gurnoor Brar, who has impressed with his recent performances, has not made the Test squad. Mohammed Shami has again been omitted.

Indiaโ€™s Test Squad

Shubman Gill (captain), Yashasvi Jaiswal, KL Rahul (vice-captain), Devdutt Padikkal, Rishabh Pant (wicketkeeper, subject to fitness clearance), Dhruv Jurel (wicketkeeper), Ravindra Jadeja, Anshul Kamboj, Jasprit Bumrah, Prasidh Krishna, Akash Deep, Sai Sudharsan, Nitish Kumar Reddy, Washington Sundar, Kuldeep Yadav and Mohammed Siraj.

Gill to Lead First Three ODIs, Iyer to Captain the Final Two

India’s five-match ODI series will begin on November 4 in Auckland and conclude on November 15 in Mount Maunganui.

The BCCI has divided the ODI squad into two groups to accommodate changes in leadership and preparations for the subsequent Test series. Gill will lead the team in the first three matches before shifting his focus to red-ball cricket. KL Rahul will also prioritise Test preparations after the third ODI.

Iyer will captain India in the final two matches, with Ishan Kishan serving as his deputy.

The split in leadership gives India an opportunity to manage players’ workloads while preparing for both formats during the New Zealand tour.

Tilak Varma Returns; Kumar Kushagra Gets First ODI Call-Up

Tilak Varma has returned to the ODI squad for the final two matches. He last represented India in the 50-over format in December 2025.

Kumar Kushagra has received his first ODI selection and will provide another wicketkeeping option for the final leg of the series.

However, the absence of Ravindra Jadeja, Hardik Pandya and Mohammed Shami from the ODI squads is notable. Bumrah has been reserved for the Test series, while Prasidh Krishna’s selection for the opening three ODIs remains subject to fitness clearance.

Rohit Sharma and Virat Kohli feature in both ODI squads, alongside a mix of established international players and emerging talent.
