Mungeli — Amid the scorching summer heat, a severe water crisis has triggered widespread anger and frustration among residents across several neighborhoods of the town. While authorities across the state claim to be working on a war footing to tackle summer water shortages, the ground reality in Mungeli paints a completely different picture, with citizens reportedly struggling for even a single bucket of water.
Locals allege that the continued negligence of the Municipal Council has pushed the situation to the brink, leaving families without proper access to drinking and household water during one of the hottest periods of the year. Residents say civic officials remain unresponsive despite repeated complaints and growing public outrage.
Municipal Resolution Remained Only on Paper
According to local residents, during a Municipal Council meeting held on April 9, 2026, councilors unanimously approved a proposal to replace old and repeatedly malfunctioning water pumps with new ones to ensure uninterrupted supply during the summer season. However, citizens claim the proposal never moved beyond paperwork and no concrete action was taken on the ground.
Collapsed Borewell at the Center of the Crisis
The crisis has been particularly severe in areas falling under Rajendra Ward and Vivekananda Ward. A borewell located near the residence of local resident Rakesh Joshi had been supplying water to Sarathipara, Patwapara, and Devanganpara localities.
However, over the last two to three months, the borewell’s water level reportedly declined significantly, and the structure eventually collapsed, bringing the water supply system to a complete halt. Despite several repair attempts, the issue remains unresolved, and residents claim that authorities have failed to initiate the drilling of a new borewell.
Temporary Arrangement Creates Bigger Problems
After the original borewell stopped functioning, officials reportedly arranged an alternative water supply through pipelines connected from Balani Chowk. But this temporary arrangement has placed additional pressure on an already burdened water source.
As a result, water pressure across multiple neighborhoods has dropped drastically. Residents say it now takes nearly half an hour to fill a single bucket of water, while overhead household tanks are no longer filling properly.
Dirty and Contaminated Water Raises Health Concerns
Adding to the public distress, residents allege that the limited water being supplied is muddy, sandy, and contaminated. Citizens fear the poor water quality could lead to serious health problems, especially during extreme summer conditions.
Many residents described the situation as a direct threat to public health and accused the administration of failing to provide even basic civic necessities.
Residents Say Complaints Ignored
Local resident Rakesh Joshi stated that the water crisis has persisted for over a month despite repeated complaints to municipal authorities and local ward representatives. According to him, no permanent solution has yet been implemented.
Another resident, Ishwar Devangan of Vivekananda Ward, claimed that the borewell had malfunctioned several times in the past and has now completely collapsed, worsening the situation further. Families, he said, are now being forced to travel long distances to fetch water for daily use.
Questions Raised Over Administrative Accountability
The worsening crisis has also raised questions regarding administrative accountability. Earlier, District Collector Kundan Kumar had reportedly directed officials to repair all water sources and pipeline systems before the onset of summer. Additionally, Deputy Chief Minister Arun Sao had also issued strict instructions across the state regarding uninterrupted water supply during the summer season.
Despite these directives, residents allege that the Municipal Council has failed to implement timely measures, resulting in severe hardship for the public.
Public Anger Intensifies; Demand for Immediate Action
With temperatures continuing to rise, frustration among residents is growing rapidly. Citizens are now demanding immediate drilling of a new borewell, restoration of proper water supply systems, and urgent intervention from senior district authorities to prevent the crisis from escalating further.
Residents warn that if immediate action is not taken, public protests against the civic administration could intensify in the coming days.
