Tamil Nadu: Engineering Student Beaten to Death in Coimbatore; Drug Trafficking Angle Suspected

The 20-year-old private engineering college student was allegedly attacked by a group of around 10 men while he was out with a friend.

Coimbatore: A 20-year-old engineering student was allegedly beaten to death by a group of men in Coimbatore, Tamil Nadu, with police investigating whether the attack was linked to information allegedly provided about drug trafficking.

The deceased, identified as Amuthan, was a native of Kallakurichi district and a third-year student at a private engineering college in Coimbatore.

According to reports, Amuthan was out with a friend when a group of around 10 men allegedly stopped them and attacked them. While his friend managed to escape, Amuthan was reportedly subjected to a severe assault.

After fleeing the scene, the friend returned with another person and rescued Amuthan. He was taken to a hospital on a two-wheeler, but reportedly died on the way to the hospital.

Police Begin Investigation

The incident was subsequently reported to Chettipalayam Police, who reached the location and took custody of Amuthan’s body. It was sent to the ESI Hospital in Singanallur for post-mortem examination.

Amuthan’s family has maintained that he was not involved in any criminal activity.

Police are investigating the circumstances surrounding the assault, including whether the killing was connected to a suspected drug-trafficking information leak or an earlier dispute involving the student.

Earlier Dispute at College Hostel

According to information provided by the family, Amuthan had initially lived in the college hostel during his first year but moved to an outside room during his second year, reportedly because of concerns over the food.

He later returned to the college hostel during his third year.

A few days before the fatal attack, Amuthan and another hostel resident reportedly had an argument with some workers from northern India who were employed as cooks at the hostel. Following the dispute, the college administration reportedly removed Amuthan and his friend from the hostel.

The situation was later said to have been resolved, after which Amuthan returned to the hostel.

Mysterious Group Allegedly Carried Out Attack

The circumstances surrounding the subsequent attack have raised questions, as a group of men allegedly assaulted Amuthan before fleeing the scene.

Authorities are now examining the motive behind the killing, identifying those involved and determining whether the incident was connected to the earlier hostel dispute or any suspected information about drug trafficking.

The post-mortem examination and further police investigation are expected to provide more clarity on the circumstances surrounding the student’s death.
