New Delhi, India: Renowned environmentalist, engineer, and education reformer Sonam Wangchuk has announced that he will continue his hunger strike despite being admitted to Safdarjung Hospital, saying he will not end his 23-day fast until the government allows a delegation of youth leaders to meet Members of Parliament (MPs).
Writing from his hospital bed on Monday, Wangchuk reaffirmed his commitment to the peaceful protest, emphasizing that his movement is aimed at protecting Ladakh’s constitutional rights, environment, and democratic representation. He appealed to both the Central Government and the Delhi Police to resolve the ongoing situation through constructive dialogue rather than confrontation.
According to Wangchuk, meaningful discussions between youth representatives and lawmakers are essential to finding a long-term solution to the concerns raised by the people of Ladakh. He stressed that the protest has always remained peaceful and non-violent, urging authorities to respect democratic values.
Meanwhile, political activity surrounding the issue intensified in New Delhi. Union Home Minister Amit Shah met Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) leader Tarun Chugh Pradhan at his Parliament office to discuss the evolving situation. Although officials have not released details of the meeting, it is being viewed as part of ongoing consultations over the demands raised by protesters.
In a separate development, representatives of the Citizens for Justice and Peace (CJP)—Saurav Das and Ashutosh Ranka—met BJP National President J.P. Nadda and submitted a written memorandum outlining the protesters’ key demands. The memorandum reportedly calls for greater engagement with Ladakh’s concerns and requests immediate dialogue between government representatives and civil society leaders.
The hunger strike has drawn widespread attention across India, with activists, students, environmental groups, and political leaders expressing concern over Wangchuk’s deteriorating health while supporting calls for a peaceful resolution. Medical experts are continuing to monitor his condition at Safdarjung Hospital as the fast enters its 23rd day.
The developments have once again highlighted the growing debate over Ladakh’s governance, environmental protection, and constitutional safeguards, with many observers urging the government to engage in meaningful negotiations to end the prolonged protest peacefully.
