NHPC Launches Construction of 240 MW Uri-I Stage-II Hydroelectric Project in Jammu & Kashmir


NEW DELHI  — NHPC Chairman and Managing Director (CMD) Bhupender Gupta officially inaugurated construction activities for the 240 MW Uri-I Stage-II Hydroelectric Project in the Uri region of Baramulla district, Jammu & Kashmir, marking a significant step forward in the development of India’s renewable energy infrastructure.

The inauguration ceremony commenced with the first blast for the Adit-3A to Head Race Tunnel (HRT) through the existing Adit-3, signaling the start of major construction work on the strategically important hydropower project.

The event was attended by Suprakash Adhikari, Director (Technical), NHPC, along with representatives from the District Administration, District Police, local residents, senior NHPC officials, and project stakeholders.

Addressing the gathering, Bhupender Gupta congratulated the NHPC project team and M/s MAX Infra (I) Ltd. for the successful launch of construction activities. He emphasized the importance of accelerating project execution while ensuring adherence to the highest standards of quality, safety, and cost efficiency.

“The successful commencement of construction activities reflects NHPC’s commitment to timely project implementation and sustainable hydropower development. All stakeholders must work in close coordination to achieve project milestones efficiently,” Gupta said.

During the visit, Miren Kumar Verma, Head of Project (HOP), Uri-I Stage-II Hydroelectric Project, briefed the CMD and senior NHPC officials on the project’s progress, engineering plans, and construction strategies designed to ensure smooth and timely execution.

The 240 MW Uri-I Stage-II Hydroelectric Project is expected to significantly enhance power generation capacity in Jammu & Kashmir, supporting India’s broader transition toward clean and renewable energy. In addition to strengthening the region’s energy infrastructure, the project is anticipated to create employment opportunities and contribute to local socio-economic development.

With construction activities now underway, NHPC continues to reinforce its position as one of India’s leading hydropower developers, advancing sustainable energy growth and critical infrastructure projects across the country.
