Strategic partnership aims to aggregate demand, strengthen the smart metering ecosystem and support large-scale deployment across the City Gas Distribution sector
New Delhi: Energy Efficiency Services Limited (EESL), a public-sector energy service company under the Ministry of Power, has entered into a strategic agreement with the Petroleum and Natural Gas Regulatory Board (PNGRB) to accelerate the deployment of smart domestic piped natural gas (PNG) meters across India.
The partnership aims to establish a structured ecosystem by bringing together City Gas Distribution (CGD) entities, technology providers, manufacturers, system integrators and other relevant stakeholders. The agreement is expected to facilitate demand aggregation and support the large-scale adoption of smart domestic PNG meters across the CGD sector.
Key Areas of the Agreement
Under the agreement, PNGRB will provide regulatory and sectoral support to the initiative. This will include sharing information related to standards, certification requirements, regulatory developments, conformity assessment and inspection procedures concerning smart domestic PNG metering.
PNGRB will also facilitate consultations and interactions among relevant stakeholders. The regulator will leverage EESL’s experience in project development and implementation to support the expansion of smart metering infrastructure across City Gas Distribution networks.
EESL to Drive Demand Aggregation
EESL will undertake demand aggregation for smart domestic PNG meters and leverage its technical expertise and network of industry stakeholders to strengthen coordination between CGD entities and the smart metering ecosystem.
The company will also undertake market assessments and technical evaluations to identify suitable solutions for large-scale deployment.
As part of the initiative, EESL will explore competitive procurement, price discovery and appropriate models for the supply, installation, operation and maintenance of smart domestic PNG meters.
Push for Smart Gas Metering
The collaboration is expected to help create a more coordinated and efficient ecosystem for smart PNG metering. Smart meters can enable improved monitoring, automated data collection and more efficient management of domestic gas consumption.
By combining regulatory support from PNGRB with EESL’s project implementation and demand aggregation capabilities, the initiative seeks to make smart PNG metering more scalable and accessible across the City Gas Distribution sector.
About EESL
Energy Efficiency Services Limited (EESL) is a joint venture of state-owned power sector companies under the Ministry of Power. The organisation has been involved in implementing large-scale energy efficiency programmes, including the Unnat Jyoti by Affordable LEDs for All (UJALA) scheme, formerly known as the Domestic Efficient Lighting Programme.
The partnership with PNGRB marks another step towards expanding technology-driven energy efficiency and smart infrastructure solutions in India’s growing gas distribution sector.
