Beijing / Washington |Donald Trump has warned Taiwan against making any move toward formal independence from China, signaling a cautious approach toward one of the world’s most sensitive geopolitical flashpoints following his high-profile meeting with Chinese President Xi Jinping.
Speaking after talks with Xi in China, Trump emphasized that the United States does not support unilateral efforts by Taiwan to declare independence, stating:
“We’re not looking to have somebody say, ‘Let’s go independent because the U.S. is backing us.’”
Trump added that Xi “doesn’t want to see a movement for independence” in Taiwan and suggested that maintaining stability in the region remains a priority for both Washington and Beijing.
