NIA Court proceedings enter the final stage in the 2013 Jhiram Valley attack case; 101 prosecution witnesses have testified
Jagdalpur: The judicial proceedings in the Jhiram Valley Maoist attack case have entered their final stage, with the NIA Court scheduled to hear final arguments on August 10, 2026.
The case has been under judicial consideration for several years, and the upcoming hearing is expected to mark a significant step toward the conclusion of the trial. Following the final arguments, the court may reserve its judgment and announce a date for the verdict.
Trial Involves 11 Accused
The prosecution is currently proceeding against 11 accused persons in the case. One of the accused has died, while proceedings against the remaining accused have continued.
During the trial, the prosecution presented extensive evidence before the court. Statements of 101 prosecution witnesses were recorded, along with documentary and other evidence related to the case.
Based on the witness testimonies and evidence presented during the proceedings, the case has now reached the stage of final arguments.
Final Arguments on August 10
During the August 10 hearing, both the prosecution and defense are expected to present their final arguments before the court.
After hearing the concluding submissions, the court could reserve its judgment. The focus will then shift to the court’s assessment of the evidence and witness statements and its determination regarding the charges against the accused.
The eventual judgment will establish whether the accused are convicted or receive relief based on the evidence presented during the trial.
13-Year Wait for Justice
The Jhiram Valley Maoist attack remains one of the most significant and sensitive cases in Chhattisgarh’s recent history. The proceedings have attracted considerable attention not only in the state but across the country.

The final arguments and subsequent judgment are expected to be closely watched by the families of the victims and others who have been awaiting the conclusion of the case for more than 13 years.
What Happened in the Jhiram Valley Attack?
The attack took place on May 25, 2013, when the Congress Party’s Parivartan Yatra was returning toward Jagdalpur after a public meeting in Sukma.
At around 2–3 p.m., Maoists ambushed the convoy in the Jhiram Valley area and opened fire.
The attack resulted in the deaths of several prominent Congress leaders, including then Chhattisgarh Pradesh Congress Committee president Nand Kumar Patel, veteran Congress leader Vidyacharan Shukla, and former state minister and prominent tribal leader Mahendra Karma, popularly known as the “Bastar Tiger.”
Several security personnel and civilians were also killed in the attack.
The incident was one of the deadliest Maoist attacks in Chhattisgarh and had a major impact on the state’s political landscape.
With the final arguments scheduled for August 10, the long-running judicial proceedings have entered a crucial phase, and attention is now focused on the court’s eventual verdict.
