Bongaigaon, Assam, India | July 28, 2026: NTPC Bongaigaon has highlighted the remarkable success of its Girl Empowerment Mission (GEM), a flagship Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR) initiative dedicated to empowering girls from rural and underprivileged communities through education, leadership development, life skills, and confidence-building.
During a media interaction, Shri Arnab Maitra, Executive Director & Head of Project, NTPC Bongaigaon, outlined the journey of the program and its steady expansion since its launch. What began as a small initiative in 2018 has now evolved into one of NTPC’s most impactful social development programs, benefiting more than 16,000 girls across India.
A Growing National Initiative
The Girl Empowerment Mission (GEM) was first introduced in 2018 across three NTPC projects, with an initial participation of 392 girls. Over the years, the initiative has expanded significantly, reaching thousands of young girls in multiple regions of the country.
According to NTPC, the program focuses on equipping participants with the knowledge, confidence, and practical skills necessary to pursue higher education, become future leaders, and improve their quality of life.
NTPC Bongaigaon’s Contribution
NTPC Bongaigaon joined the initiative in 2022 and has successfully conducted four editions of the residential program.
During this period:
- 210 girls have benefited from the initiative.
- The 2026 edition has expanded participation from 40 to 50 girls, reflecting the growing demand and success of the program.
The month-long residential training program provides a holistic learning experience that extends well beyond traditional classroom education.

Based on an independent evaluation, approximately 10% of participants are offered free education at the NTPC Township School.
