Glasgow, Scotland: India’s celebrated weightlifter Saikhom Mirabai Chanu etched her name into the history books by becoming the first female weightlifter in the world to win three consecutive Commonwealth Games gold medals in the 96-year history of the Games.
Competing in the women’s 48kg weightlifting category at the Commonwealth Games in Glasgow, Scotland, Chanu delivered a dominant performance to secure India’s first gold medal of the tournament. She lifted a total of 190kg, including 85kg in the snatch and 105kg in the clean and jerk, comfortably finishing ahead of her rivals.
With this victory, Mirabai successfully defended the titles she previously won at the 2018 and 2022 Commonwealth Games, making it three successive gold medals—an achievement unmatched by any other woman in Commonwealth weightlifting history.
The accomplishment is even more significant considering the rich legacy of the Commonwealth Games, which began in 1930 in Hamilton, Canada. Across nearly a century of competition, no female weightlifter had previously managed to claim three consecutive Commonwealth Games gold medals.
Mirabai Chanu’s latest triumph further strengthens her reputation as one of India’s greatest weightlifters. An Olympic silver medalist and a World Champion, she has consistently delivered exceptional performances on the international stage and continues to inspire millions of young athletes across the country.
Her historic success also provided a perfect start to India’s medal campaign at the Games, boosting the nation’s confidence for the remainder of the competition. Sports experts hailed her performance as a testament to her discipline, consistency, determination, and world-class ability.
With another remarkable chapter added to her illustrious career, Mirabai Chanu has once again proven why she remains one of the brightest stars in international weightlifting and a symbol of excellence for Indian sports.
