IPL 2026 Playoff Race Heats Up as Eight Teams Remain in Contention

The race for the Indian Premier League 2026 playoffs has entered a dramatic phase, with eight franchises still mathematically alive after Match 57 between Royal Challengers Bengaluru and Kolkata Knight Riders.

According to qualification projections shared by the tournament’s official broadcasters, the playoff battle remains wide open, although a few teams have emerged as clear frontrunners heading into the final stretch of the league stage.

RCB and GT Almost Through

Gujarat Titans currently hold the strongest playoff position with a massive 94.8% probability of qualification. Close behind are Royal Challengers Bengaluru with a 92.6% chance of reaching the top four.

Both teams have displayed remarkable consistency throughout the season, combining strong batting depth with disciplined bowling performances. Their dominant campaigns have placed them in near-control of playoff qualification, and just one or two more victories could officially seal their spots.

RCB, led by a balanced squad and strong top-order performances, have become one of the most consistent sides this season. Meanwhile, Gujarat Titans continue to impress with their tactical discipline and ability to win under pressure.

SRH and PBKS in Strong Position

Sunrisers Hyderabad and Punjab Kings are also well-positioned in the playoff race.

  • SRH qualification chances: 64.7%
  • PBKS qualification chances: 62.8%

Sunrisers Hyderabad have benefited from explosive batting performances and improved middle-order stability, while Punjab Kings have delivered several crucial wins at key moments of the season.

However, both teams still face pressure in their remaining fixtures, as a couple of losses could significantly tighten the race.

CSK and RR Still Fighting Hard

Five-time champions Chennai Super Kings remain firmly in contention with a 41.7% qualification probability, while Rajasthan Royals hold a 40.6% chance.

CSK’s playoff hopes continue to rely heavily on experience and finishing strength in crunch situations. Rajasthan Royals, meanwhile, have shown flashes of brilliance but struggled with consistency during critical phases of the tournament.

With several direct clashes still remaining, both teams remain capable of making late surges into the top four.

KKR and DC Hanging by a Thread

For defending champions Kolkata Knight Riders, the situation has become extremely difficult. KKR currently hold only a 1.8% chance of qualification and now depend not only on winning their remaining matches but also on multiple favorable results elsewhere.

Similarly, Delhi Capitals are almost out of the race, with projections giving them just a 1.0% chance of advancing.

Both teams now face near must-win scenarios combined with net run rate calculations and dependence on other teams dropping points.

Playoff Battle Expected to Go Down to the Final Week

With multiple head-to-head clashes still left in the schedule, analysts expect the IPL 2026 playoff race to remain intense until the final week of league-stage action.

Net run rate could ultimately play a decisive role, especially among mid-table teams battling for the third and fourth playoff spots.

The ongoing season has once again showcased the unpredictability and competitiveness that make the IPL one of the world’s biggest cricket tournaments, with fans expected to witness several high-pressure encounters before the playoff lineup is officially confirmed.
