New Delhi / Kolkata: Coal India Limited has taken a significant step toward sustainable mining by organizing a high-level workshop on the electrification of mining dumpers and trucks at its corporate headquarters in Kolkata. The initiative aims to reduce dependence on fossil fuels, cut operational costs, and accelerate the company’s transition toward environmentally responsible mining practices.

Addressing participants virtually from Dhanbad, Achyut Ghatak, Director (Technical) at Coal India, emphasized that electrification of mining machinery is a critical step in reducing the sector’s reliance on fossil fuels. He noted that transitioning to an electric fleet would not only help lower carbon emissions but also significantly reduce long-term operating costs and improve efficiency.
He highlighted that diesel-powered dumpers and trucks—currently the backbone of mining logistics—contribute heavily to fuel consumption and emissions. Replacing them with electric alternatives could transform the environmental footprint of large-scale mining operations.
