Sakti, Chhattisgarh (India) — A devastating industrial accident at a power plant operated by Vedanta Limited in central India has left at least 10 workers dead and 23 others injured, officials confirmed on Tuesday.
The incident occurred in Singhitari village of Sakti district when a boiler tube inside the plant suddenly ruptured, triggering a powerful explosion. According to local authorities, the blast took place in the afternoon and caused severe damage in and around the boiler unit, where temperatures are typically extremely high.
Casualties and Rescue Efforts
Police officials reported that four workers died instantly at the scene, while six others succumbed to their injuries during treatment at a hospital. The 23 injured workers were immediately rushed to nearby medical facilities in Raigarh district, where they are currently undergoing treatment, many in critical condition.
Emergency response teams, including police and district administration personnel, quickly arrived at the site and initiated rescue operations. Due to the intense heat surrounding the boiler area, evacuating workers and securing the site posed significant challenges.
Government Response and Compensation
Vishnu Deo Sai expressed deep sorrow over the tragedy and announced financial assistance for the victims’ families. The state government has declared compensation of ₹5 lakh (approximately $6,000 USD) for the families of deceased workers and ₹50,000 (around $600 USD) for those injured.
The Chief Minister also directed officials to ensure free and proper medical treatment for all the injured and ordered a thorough investigation into the incident. Authorities have tasked the Bilaspur Commissioner with leading the inquiry, and strict action has been promised against those found responsible.
Investigation and Allegations
State Industry Minister Lakhan Lal Dewangan confirmed that multiple investigations have been initiated, including probes under labor laws to determine whether safety regulations were violated.
Meanwhile, local legislator Ramkumar Yadav has accused the plant management of negligence, alleging that safety standards were not properly followed. He staged a protest outside the facility, demanding accountability and stricter enforcement of industrial safety norms.
What is a Power Plant Boiler?
A boiler in a thermal power plant is a sealed system that uses heat generated from burning fuel to convert water into high-pressure steam. This steam drives turbines, which in turn generate electricity. Any failure in boiler components—such as tube ruptures—can lead to catastrophic explosions due to the immense pressure and temperature involved.
Ongoing Situation
Authorities continue to monitor the condition of the injured workers, while safety inspections and investigations are underway. The incident has once again raised serious concerns about industrial safety standards in India’s power sector.
Further updates are expected as the investigation progresses.
