Center Seeks Report from West Bengal Over Alleged Protocol Lapse During President’s Visit

Kolkata / New Delhi: The controversy surrounding the alleged “insult” to President Droupadi Murmu during her recent visit to North Bengal has intensified, prompting the central government to demand an explanation from the West Bengal administration.

According to officials, the Union Ministry of Home Affairs has asked the West Bengal government to submit a detailed report on the incident by 5:00 PM on Sunday. The request was formally conveyed by Union Home Secretary Govind Mohan in a letter addressed to the state’s Chief Secretary Nandini Chakraborty.

Center Raises Concerns Over Protocol Violations

The Union government has reportedly cited violations of the “Blue Book,” a confidential document that outlines security and protocol guidelines for the President, Vice President, Prime Minister, and their families.

Officials in New Delhi questioned why key state authorities—including Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee, the Chief Secretary, and the Director General of Police—were absent during the President’s arrival. Reports indicate that only Siliguri Mayor Gautam Deb was present to receive the President, which the Center considers a breach of established protocol.

The Home Ministry has also sought clarification regarding several alleged lapses, including inadequate arrangements at the venue, a reported shortage of water in the restroom prepared for the President, and poor sanitation along the route used for the presidential convoy.

Demand for Administrative Action

Sources said the Center has asked the state government to explain what action has been taken so far and why local officials allegedly failed to ensure proper arrangements. The letter reportedly calls for accountability from the District Magistrate of Darjeeling, the Siliguri Police Commissioner, and an Additional District Magistrate responsible for protocol arrangements.

What Triggered the Controversy

The issue came to light after President Murmu expressed disappointment during an event near Bagdogra Airport on Saturday. The President was attending a program organized by members of the tribal community, but the event reportedly saw low attendance after the venue was shifted from Bidhannagar in Siliguri to Gosaipur near Bagdogra.

During her address, the President also referred to the absence of senior state officials, including the Chief Minister and ministers, during her visit.

With the Center seeking an urgent explanation, the matter has now sparked political debate and administrative scrutiny at the national level.
